Basement Renovations for Spring

Spring Cleaning Is the Perfect Time to Transform Your Basement from A Storage Unit to A Beautiful Space

Basements are often the most neglected part of a home even though they are a large part of a home’s livable space. The “out of sight, out of mind” saying can easily refer to how we treat our basements. It’s easy to throw anything in the Basement for storage, but over time, the basement can become cluttered and a waste of potential living space. This spring, consider basement renovations when you’re going through your basement clutter. Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to transform your basement from a storage unit into a beautiful living space.

Get Rid of That Junk

When spring cleaning your basement, get rid of anything that you haven’t used in the last six months. You don’t have to throw it out—you can donate it or sell it—but you should get rid of it. The more space you clear up in your basement, the easier your basement renovations will be.

Store Winter Clothes & Accessories

If you have enough closet space, you can store your winter clothes and decorations in totes, and pile them in your closet. Also consider using a shed in your backyard. Sheds are great storage units for shovels, patio furniture, tools, and other outdoor accessories. If your storage space is limited, designate an area in your basement for storage, but keep it organized and tidy. Depending on your desired décor for your basement renovations, you can hang a curtain or use a room divider to hide your storage area.

Choose Your New Basement

With so many possible uses, it is important to decide what you will use your basement for when planning basement renovations. Basements can be used for a variety of living spaces, including:

  • Family rooms
  • Workout rooms
  • Man dens
  • Home theatres
  • Bars
  • Yoga spaces

Once you’ve decided on your basement’s new purpose, you can decide what to keep in your basement, what to get rid of, and what to store. If you’re planning on using your basement as a workout space, you can keep the treadmill and other workout equipment down there. Or, if you’re planning to use it as a casual rec room/man den, then you can keep all of your favourite stuff that isn’t allowed to be showcased throughout the rest of the home, like that Bob Marley poster or that neon beer sign.

If your basement is unfinished, consider finishing it as part of your basement renovations. A newly finished, freshly painted basement can go a long way in terms of a comfortable and attractive living room. Also consider lighting and décor to really make the most out of this special living space. Your basement has so much potential, so clean it up this spring, and transform it into your desired space with basement renovations.
