It was an other beautiful week here in the Charleston area and what better way to spend it than some exterior painting in Folly Beach SC! This was a fun project with some great unique colors. We gave this house a beachy feel that had the neighbors wishing they had the creativity and courage to pull it off.

Pressure Washing the House

As you may know when painting an exterior in Folly Beach the first step is to Pressure wash. This house was not washed in a very long time and it was evident by the amount of dirt and mildew. The most important thing to remember when washing a house (especially this dirty) is to let the soap/chemical do the work. A pressure washer isn’t meant to remove grime by force. Simply apply the soap either through the pressure washer with a down streamer and the black soap nozzle or with a garden sprayer. On this house we used a 50/50 water and bleach solution with some Simple Green added. Spray it on let it work a little and rinse it off. The key is to you a high volume of water, not high pressure.

Staining the Deck and Shower Stall

After everything was clean and dry we got into some stain. Behind the carport/shed is an outdoor shower stall that was bare pressure treated wood and the floor was made from Trex. Keeping the stain off the floor was not for the feint of heart but with a little time and the right masking we kept the stain on the wood where it belongs. We also stained the front enclosed porch and two sets of small stoops in the back of the house.

All the staining was done with TWP 100 and the color was my personal favorite Pecan. I’ve written about the importance of using a non-film forming oil stain (TWP) in a previous post, which can be found here.

Time to Paint This Folly Beach House!

All the siding and trim was done by method of brush and roll. The hot pink doors and green siding were painted with Sherwin Williams Resilience in a Satin finish, and the yellow trim/white trim was SW Resilience in a gloss finish. All the wood and hardi plank received two coats of paint. On the hardi-plank we 4 inch mini rollers for the bulk of the work and a brush to cut in around the edges. The nap on mini rollers makes them the ideal tool for rolling lap siding. We use them horizontally with the end of the roller pointed upwards to catch the bottom edge of the board above it.
