A makeover worth the wait!

Many homeowners put off updating their homes – always waiting for the right timing. When it was finally time to give this large living area its makeover, the homeowner contacted our interior designer, Diane Ten Broeck, for help.

After meeting with the client, Diane learned she was drawn to a feminine, pretty style and wanted an updated transitional look with eye-catching details. Once in the room, Diane noticed the room had several challenges she would need to overcome. First, the old window treatments were dark, dated, and brought unwanted attention to the awkwardly lower ceiling above the far windows. Second, the fireplace and architecture needed updating. And finally, per the request of the client, she needed the overall design to complement an existing German Silver Cabinet already in the room.

Diane knew the window treatments would be key to addressing the acoustic properties of the large room as well as providing a way to elongate the appearance of the shorter wall. Working with Sheffield window treatment specialist, Lori Yanez, Diane designed window treatments to visually open the room and give it the high style the client wanted. Using tack top pleated panels fabricated in a stone colored linen with an iridescent finish, she trimmed the panels with an exquisite Scalamandre tape trim. By using long vertical draperies and the hanging them to the full height of the short wall, Diane diminished the issue the low ceiling caused. The heavily lined drapery panels also helped with the acoustics of the room by absorbing some echo. For light control, Diane chose woven wood shades with a subtle mother-of-pearl finish which subtilely reflected sheen of the German silver cabinet.

A big, comfortable sectional in blue commands the main entertainment space, and stylish chairs, accent tables and a defining area rug, provided the overall effect of style, beauty, and sophistication the client requested.

Finally, after first using the client’s German silver cabinet as inspiration, Diane turned it into the stunning centerpiece it deserved to be.

By carefully balancing color, textures, and finishes while addressing the client’s desire for a luxurious yet comfortable living space, this is one makeover that was definitely worth the wait!
