Design Challenge: Decorating with Neutrals

Common Design Challenge: I love Decorating with Neutral Colors, but how do you keep everything from looking too bland and boring?

Decorating Den’s Thora Tam has some insight:

Neutral color schemes can be relaxing and Elegant, if done correctly.  The best way to handle Neutral colors, whether it’s shades of white/ivory, grey or brown tones, is the use of texture and pattern.

Take a look at this elegant living room. There are basically two colors in this room- ivory and brown.  The asymmetrical arrangement of the two Sofas flanking the fireplace lends a comfortable feel, and sets up a great conversation area.  We have a nice, linen texture on these 2 sofas and an interesting pattern juxtaposition of the damask and hounds tooth pillows.  Instead of a classic Oriental rug, we add a more contemporary touch with a fun shag rug. And yes, animal prints are here to stay!  They are a great neutral, and the subtle touches on the nesting side tables and accent chair add personality and keep this room from being too serious.
