Stilt Parking byelaws introduced by BBMP in Bengaluru

Parking is always a problem in the big cities and metro. The way the population and the wealth increases, the count of the vehicles multiplies too with rich people having more than two cars. Due to paucity of Parking spaces we often see cars parked outside the house on the road which congests the city and also increases the chances of accidents as well. In the master plan of BBMP for the year 2015 provision for parking space was made mandatory but it does not mention stilt parking. Stilt parking was made compulsory in the city of Delhi but due to a judicial dispute the enforcement was kept in abeyance.

To solve the chronic problem of parking and to decongest the city Bangalore Bruhat Managar Palike has enacted byelaws which state that buildings having more than two floors will have to make provision of parking on the ground floor. No doubt Bengaluru needs a parking law to keep the congestion in control and to prevent accidents owing to its migratory population who comes here to work or for education. With the enactment of this new byelaw many feel it will bring a solution to growing congestion of the city.

What do the residents think?
When the opinions of the residents were taken, a mixed reaction was noticed and in many instances people remarked that rich people having multiple cars often park their cars on the road due to paucity of ample space of parking for all the vehicles.

In buildings of few areas there has been parking space in the ground floor already built but there are still few areas which have a parking problem. These areas are Vijaynagar, Malleshwaram, Jalahalli and Sanjaynagar.

The preparation of the proposal for stilt parking was being made in the year 2014 and the byelaw has been passed but the proposal for mandatory ground floor parking is yet to be finalized. As per the Byelaws laid down by BBMP buildings having more than three floor (G+3) should have a height of 11.5 metres. It can be expected that the government can further increase the height of the building.

With the enforcement of this positive step from the BBMP, Bengaluru can be expected to become less congested with decreased accident rates and it can allure more property takers and is certainly a step forward to beautify the city.
