Arizona Flooring Trends: What You Need To Know for 2019 and Beyond

Thanks to the rise of such networks as HGTV and the DIY Network — to say nothing of the increasing popularity of various YouTube videos dedicated to home improvement — many homeowners are paying attention to Flooring trends as they consider their home improvement options. For Arizona homeowners, however, there are a few flooring trends that are more prevalent than others. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular materials used in Arizona flooring, and talk about some of the flooring trends in 2019 and beyond.

A Popular Staple: Ceramic Tiles

At the turn of the 20th century, ceramic tiles began cropping up in “new builds” in the greater Phoenix area. Commonly used in bathrooms, floors, and kitchen countertop areas, white was the most popular ceramic tile color, and it still is today. However, pastels often in the so-called “Southwest” theme started to make their way into the color pantheon in the 1920s and 1930s.

Indeed, according to Trulia, ceramic tiles are one of the most preferred flooring options for Arizona residents — and glazed tile is preferred to unglazed tile. In addition to being easy to clean, versatile, durable, and providing a cooling effect during the sweltering summers, tile floors make it easier for the homeowner to spot dust and dirt, as well as desert vermin like lizards and scorpions.

A Growing Trend: Bamboo Flooring

Made of the fast-growing grass that’s the staple of the panda bear’s diet, bamboo looks exactly like hardwood when it’s cured, but it dries much harder and is much sturdier than its hardwood counterpart, according to HGTV. Though it’s a relatively new material being used in Arizona homes today, bamboo flooring is less expensive and more environmentally conscious than its hardwood counterpart, making it an increasingly popular option.

Not Recommended: Vinyl

Even though today’s vinyl flooring is much more “luxurious” than the vinyl flooring of the 1970s and 1980s, it is not as popular in Arizona as it is in other parts of the country. There are a number of reasons why this is so. However, according to Marian Keeler, author of Fundamentals of Integrated Design for Sustainable Building, environmental and health concerns are the top two reasons why Arizonians shy away from this popular flooring trend.

“Vinyl presents a health hazard across its entire lifecycle, from production to installation to use and disposal,” she said, noting that vinyl’s emission of lead, cadmium and phthalate plasticizers over the course of several years will lead to toxicity in the air.
