Staying Hydrated in Winter

Drinking water is a key component in staying healthy and is essential for everyday living. Believe it or not, it’s just as important to stay hydrated in the Winter as it is in the summer. In the summer, it’s easy to remind yourself to drink plenty of water due to the heat and needing to cool yourself down. But in the winter, drinking enough water is still important as the temperatures begin to drop and our bodies receive less moisture.

Regardless of the time of year, our bodies will always require water and hydration. Even though we don’t have the heat or sunshine anymore from summer, in the winter we get our heat from fires, furnaces and heaters. These heat sources can still make us thirsty and crave water. So even though you may not be sweating as much due to the hot, summer heat, it’s just as important to continue to drink water in the winter.

The amount of water you should drink varies depending on activity level, weight and age. The average amount of water to drink during the winter time is around nine glasses per day – but again, this will vary from person to person.

Drinking an ice cold glass of water doesn’t sound as appealing in the winter as it would in the summer, but there are several alternatives for getting the correct water intake. Eating soup will warm you up as well as fill you up and still give you the water that you need. Eating water-based foods is another great option such as watermelon, grapes, berries or tomatoes.
