How Well Are Your Painters Trained?

Michael Peters, Director of Courtney & Wise, was the Chair of the Education & Training Committee of the Master Painters Association of NSW for more than 7 years. Obviously, he knows a lot about training expert painters.

Painters may take training courses at polytechnics, through the Master Painters Association, or online, but the heart of training for painters is the apprenticeship program.

A new professional painter must take courses in preparation for a certificate which shows an appropriate level of knowledge. Then comes a placement with a master painter. With both hands-on work and continued training, the apprentice develops a high level of skill in a wide range of situations, and also learns needed safety practices and professional skills in planning and supervising painting jobs.

When you consider which painter to hire, ask what certificates they have, where they apprenticed, and where they trained. If you're not satisfied with the answers, don't settle for a poorly trained tradie.
