Can You Paint Your House in the Winter?

You can certainly paint a picture of your house in the wintertime. But can you paint the exterior of your house in winter? Or hire a professional painter to do so?

You can. A crisp, clear winter day can work very well for painting. Here's what to watch out for, though:
  • A big change in temperature between night and day can keep paint from drying properly. A mild winter's day lets paint begin coalescing and forming that strong protective coating you expect from paint. If the temperature plummets overnight, dew can form, moisture can get into the paint, and you can end up with surface staining or paint that doesn't hold well to the surface.
  • The same thing can apply when it comes to painting early in the morning on a day that is much warmer than the previous night. Painters can't begin the work until the surfaces are dry and the temperature is settled. The differences between day and night time temperatures in winter can lead to a short work day, so the overall job can take longer in the winter than it would in another season.
  • Humidity and precipitation are the biggest issues for winter painting. Watch the weather forecast and avoid exterior painting when rain or snow are expected. Interior painting offers greater flexibility.
In general, when you want to have your home or business painted in the winter, expect the job to take a bit longer, and trust your painters to work with the weather.

It's often easier to get a booking with a painter in the winter than if you wait until spring. If you plan to wait for spring, call now to get on the calendar. If you wait for perfect painting weather, you may find that you're too late to get your job booked.
