How to tile walls

Exactly as you would when preparing your floor, you will first need to work out the area to be tiled on your wall(s). Including the joint width, use the exact dimensions of your Tiles when setting your layout, so they will be better balanced and more pleasing to the eye.

Establish how many tiles are going to fit per row – to do this, you will need to make a Gauging Rod. This nifty implement will enable you to position your wall tiles with greater precision, so you won’t find yourself having to cut thin pieces to fit the remaining edges of your wall(s). It will also help you to plan how the tiles will fit around windows, doors, and fireplaces etc.

To make a gauging rod, all you need is a length of timber and a pencil or piece of chalk. Placing one of your tiles against the timber mark its edge, then position and mark out a tile spacer. Repeat the procedure until you reach the end of the timber and hey presto, you have your very own gauging rod.

If your wall is free of any ridges, cracks or indents, you are now ready to lay your adhesive and get tiling. Use a 3ft spirit level to ascertain whether there are any bumps or indents. If your wall is not perfectly flat, however, you will need to apply levelling compound, just as you would when prepping your floor.

Ideally you should start tiling from the bottom upwards, provided that your skirting board is level (check with a spirit level). If not, start slightly less than a tile height above the skirting board, using a timber baton temporarily secured to the wall with panel pins.
