Late this fall, we asked our large animal vet, Dr Gillian Ferguson of Bluestone Veterinary Services, to check to see if our two Ewes, Amy and 2%, were pregnant. Since they had been with our ram for a while, we did not know how far along they would be or if they were pregnant at all. The test came back negative and everyone was disappointed. There is nothing like new lambs to brighten a snowy winter.
Just to double check we asked the vet to visit the farm again a few days ago, and sure enough, the two ewes were pregnant. That means we will probably have lambs in March which puts them at the right age and weight to show at the Dutchess County Fair in August. I installed a wireless camera in the barn so we can have some advance warning if the sheep have any problems while giving birth.
I always enjoy feeding the animals. It is especially a challenge in a blizzard. Even so, we have a good time, and so do the animals.
