Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation

Raleigh Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation

If you are concerned about your Raleigh Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation and it has been a while since you have had your system serviced then maybe it’s about time you give Pur-Vent LLC a call. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air quality is four to five times worse than outdoor air quality. With that being said, it’s critical to constantly remove polluted air and introduce fresh air into your home.

Raleigh Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation

There are many sources of pollutants for indoor air, these include but are not limited to these examples: pets, off-gassing of building materials such as cabinets, carpeting, and adhesives; cooking and bathing; remodeling projects like sanding, painting or refinishing furniture. Pollution moving through the HVAC system from external sources and also cause an indoor buildup of bacteria, mold spores, pollen, and dust. Depending on the season and climate, indoor and outdoor humidity can cause excessive moisture and mildew problems as well.

Energy-Efficient homes that have been made airtight actually tend to have poor indoor air quality because the pollutants inside can’t exit the home.

Basic Ventilation Options

Here are some basic ventilation options for improving indoor air quality:

  • Open Windows and Doors. This will cost you nothing unless you are running your HVAC system when doing this which lets out the hot or cold air the system is pumping in. This introduces fresh air into your home.
  • Vented windows with fans or air conditioners can also help circulate fresh air into your home.
  • Install open kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans the vent to the outdoors. These do not introduce fresh air but help keep the indoor air quality cleaner. The also help depressurize your home which pulls unconditioned outdoor air in through the cracks of your home.
  • Install semi-controlled ventilation. This system includes a return duct which connects the outdoor air with the central return and exhaust fan to remove indoor pollutants.

Advanced Ventilation Options

A whole-house, vented and ducted system is probably the most efficient type of ventilation for a home which provides a steady supply of fresh, filtered and conditioned air from the outside while removing stale interior air. When you have a system like this setup you will typically remove the same amount of air out that you introduce back in. The best systems include filtering, pre-conditioning, and booster fans. Here is what each of these features does:

  • Filtering: This helps control contaminants that would otherwise recirculate through your home when fresh air is introduced. This does require that filters are occasionally cleaned or replaced.
  • Preconditioning: An (HRV) or heat recovery ventilator uses heat exchangers to recapture 60-80% of your conditioned temperatures from the outgoing air to heat and cool incoming fresh air.
  • Booster Fans: These are small, separately switched fans which are typically located in the kitchen and bathrooms to control moisture and heat generated by cooking and showering.

The biggest drawback of installing a mechanical ventilation system is the higher upfront costs but nothing can better improve your Raleigh indoor air quality and ventilation. Homeowners also need to take into consideration the additional complexities associated with such a system.
