How to remove dry adhesive from ceramic tiles
Removing dry adhesive from the back of the tile can look like an impossible job. But it’s important to do it correctly if you’re redoing loose or broken tiles in a certain area and require to use the same tiles.
To clean the tiles for reinstallation you need to prepare a bucket or laver and fill it with warm water. Place the tiles in it and leave the tiles like that for 1-2 hours. The water will dissolve the adhesive. The adhesive should become soft to touch, that’s when you can remove the tiles from the buckets.
Use a metal scraper and start scraping the back of the tile to remove the adhesive. Be careful not to damage the surface, but also make sure to remove all of the residues so you can reinstall the tiles without a problem.
How to remove mastic adhesive from the surface
Mastic is an organic adhere that is used to install wall and floor tiles. Mastic is not water resistant so it will dissolve when in contact with water.
Prepare the area
Removing tile adhesive indoors can be a messy job. That’s why you need to prepare the area first. Remove valuable objects and small furniture from the room to protect them. Cover the rest with a protective sheet and clear the working area. The adhesive will create a lot of dust, so wear gloves, protective goggles and protective mask while removing it. Wet the floor to reduce the amount of dust in the air.
Wet the area
Damp a couple of cloths and place them over the adhesive you want to remove. Leave them over the mastic for a couple of hours. The water will soak and it will make the mastic softer and easier to scrape out.
Remove the mastic adhesive
- Using a hammer and a chiselIf you just need to remove adhesive from a couple of tiles or if the working area is relatively small, you can use a hammer and a chisel. If you need to work in a large area it’s recommended to rent an electrical hammer and chisel to ease your work.
After spraying the area with a little bit of water start removing the adhesive by positioning the chisel on 45 degrees and hit it carefully with the hammer. Be careful not to damage the area below the adhesive. After clearing out a spot, you can layer the chisel lower on 25-30 degree. This way you can stick the chisel under the adhesive and remove it quicker.
- Using a scraperIf the layer of adhesive is thin you can use a scraper to clear it out. However, if you’re working on a ceramic surface, use a plastic scraper. Ceramic has a glazed surface and if you use a metal scraper, you can damage the glaze. If you’re working on a larger area, you can use an electric power scraper to ease your work.
- Using a grinderIf the adhesive is in a thick layer, the best way to remove it is by using a floor grinder. The grinder uses circular motions and will cut and break the adhesive from the floor. Make sure to wear protective goggles, a dust mask and gloves.
- Cleaning up the areaWhen you’re done removing the adhesive, put the big pieces in a bucket and remove them from the room. Use a broom and sweep up the smaller pieces. Vacuum the whole room thoroughly, including furniture, light fixtures and walls to get rid of most of the dust.
After vacuuming, use a damp cloth and wipe up all surfaces in the room. Start your way from the top and don’t forget to wipe the walls. You can place a damp cloth on the bottom of a broom, secure it with tape and use it to reach the highest points in the room. Use a wet dust mop and wipe up the floor area again.
Have in mind that removing a tile adhesive will generate a lot of dust. After you’re done with the cleaning, leave the room and come back after a couple of hours. This is enough time for the dust to settle down. Inspect the room and repeat the cleaning procedure if necessary.
How to remove thin set adhesive
Thinset adhesive can be used in bathrooms and pool areas, Unlike mortar, thin set adhesive is water resistant and hard, which also makes it difficult to remove. Some of the adhesives may come out with the tiles which will leave the floor area uneven and bumpy.
After drying the adhesive gets almost impossible to remove with a hammer and a chisel. To get rid of the adhesive, you need to use an electrical chisel or a grinder. Wear protective goggles and a dust mask. Make sure to follow the same cleaning procedure when you’re done.
