Bedroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring is the perfect time to perform a thorough wardrobe cleanout. Taking out your warm weather clothes is also the perfect opportunity to clean your bedroom from the dust that has accumulated on top of your wardrobe, your Mattress and beneath your bed.

A spring Cleaning session in your bedroom is like a welcoming ritual of the sunny weather and walks in nature. So, while you’re chasing the winter blues from your bedroom you’re simultaneously improving the air in your bedroom, improving your sleep and decluttering all the mess that’s been accumulating all winter long.

So, follow our bedroom cleaning checklist to get your room clean and summer-ready in no time.

Cleaning, washing and organising your clothes, linens and curtains.

Cleanout and declutter your wardrobe first.

Warmer clothes tend to gather a lot of dust. Take that and five months of rainy days and you’re bound to have a closet that is in dire need of cleaning. So, how should you tackle it? Start cleaning your room by tidying up your wardrobe. The transition of winter to summer clothes often brings out a lot of dust, so it’s best to be done first.

Step 1: Wash ALL your winter clothes

Sort out all of your winter clothes by colour and throw them in the washing machine. As we mentioned above, warmer clothes tend to gather more dust, that’s why it’s always best to give them a cycle in your washing machine before packing them away for the next season.

Step 2: Clean your closet thoroughly

That dust has gathered on the shelves and the bottom of your wardrobe as well. Use the crevice nozzle on your vacuum cleaner and vacuum both the bottom and the shelves in your wardrobe.

Grab a damp rag and wipe any leftover dirt until there’s none. Voila! Your wardrobe is ready for your summer clothes.

Step 3: Organise your clothes

Organise your clothes into four groups – new season, trash, donate and storage. This is a great way to give back to the community and help someone in need and declutter your closet at the same time.
After washing your winter clothes, fold them and store them in vacuum bags to protect them from moths and other pests.

Step 4: Organise your wardrobe

Iron what needs ironing, fold it neatly on the shelves and hang the rest of your clothes.

Curtains need spring cleaning as well!

Often overlooked, the curtains hanging in your bedroom are dust traps. Just think about it! They sit in front of your windows and every time your windows are open and the wind blows in your curtains are the first ones to get hit by the stream of air.

Take your curtains down and throw them in the washing machine. Once a year is more than enough to keep drapes relatively dust-free. Some other things you can do throughout the year to keep your curtains in good condition are:

  • Vacuum them with the upholstery attachment;
  • Spot clean your curtains with a mix of mild detergent and a little bit of warm water. Let it sit for a minute and wipe with a damp sponge;
  • For sheers, which are usually nylon, polyester, or cotton you can simply wash two panels at a time on a delicate cycle using the cold setting. Air dry to avoid any shrinkage of the fabric or other heat damage;
  • If your curtains are a woven fabric, like velvet, for example, you may need to check the tag and most likely get them professionally cleaned.

Change your linens once a week.

When cleaning out your closet and removing your drapes, your bed is likely to become a temporary storage space (meaning that most of the things from your wardrobe will get thrown on it).

It’s unavoidable to keep your linens dust free. Take them off your bed, give them a good thump outside and throw them in the washing machine.

Mattress and pillow cleaning.

Dust your mattress

Cleaning your mattress after winter should be mandatory. In fact, it’s best to hire a professional to do it for you!

If you can’t afford to book a professional company to clean your mattress you can still remove some of the dust that’s on the top layers of your mattress.

Step 1: Vacuum your mattress

Even if you use a mattress cover you still need to vacuum your mattress every now and then. Use the upholstery tool of your vacuum cleaner for better results. Make sure you’re changing the bed cover and linens often to keep your mattress as dust-free as possible.

Step 2: Air out your mattress

We know that it’s not possible to take out your mattress if you’re living in an apartment, but if you’re living in a house then airing out your mattress can help with removing any set in odours and overall improve the state of your bed.

Those practices are essential but they aren’t enough. That is why we recommend thorough mattress cleaning at least twice a year. One of those times is, of course, the spring. You can simply use our detailed mattress cleaning guide or book a professional cleaning if you don’t have the time.

Change your pillows frequently

Just like mattresses, pillows collect a lot of dust, mould, bacteria, allergens and dead skin cells. That is why we recommend washing them 3 or 4 times a year.

Keep in mind that you should also change your pillows every two years. There’s a trick online that makes you fold your pillow in half and if it doesn’t bounce back to its normal state you should change it. We’re not sure how trustworthy this is, as the flex and bounciness of the pillow will depend on the material that they’re made of.

One thing you should consider is what is the pillow made of. Polyester pillows and feather pillows can be washed together. Memory foam and silk pillows have to be washed separately.

It’s best to use a gentle, scent-free detergent. Strong scents can have a negative influence on your sleep and can trigger some allergies.

Clean the dust from your bedroom.

The most important rule to follow while dusting your bedroom is Top to bottom; left to right.

Start from the top
Clean the ceiling fan and light fixtures first. Use a bendable duster for maximum access. It comes in handy for high and hard to reach places. Plus, you can easily throw it in the washing machine after you’re done.

To properly get into corners, mouldings and cobwebs simply flip a sock inside out, put it on the broomstick, and tie it with an elastic band.

Moving down
To clean the walls in your bedroom all you need is a flathead mop and a microfiber cloth. Use up-and-down motion without applying too much pressure.

Use the trick with the sock for cleaning the baseboards, too. Then, finally dust the floor.

Bonus tip: In order to clean any fine ornaments or smaller items that are hard to dust get an old makeup brush or paintbrush, spray it with a little bit of water and do detail dusting.
Bonus, bonus tip: Get your ducts professionally cleaned. Ducts are very important to maintain because they transfer all the air in your home and if you have dirty ducts, no matter how often you clean your house is going to be full of dust.

Carpet and floor cleaning.

Carpet cleaning

Carpet cleaning is one of the most essential parts of the Spring Cleaning. It’s also one of the hardest. Simple vacuuming won’t be enough. If you have the necessary space, airing it out is a huge bonus. However, it’s also not enough.

For tough spots, you can use this guide on the most common carpet stains and how to remove them.

Introducing fresh scents into your bedroom.

As we already mentioned, one of the most important things is to clean your ducts regularly. Otherwise, the quality of the air in your home will decrease over time. And as we all know, the quality of the air in our bedroom is extremely important for a good night sleep.

One of the best things about spring cleaning your bedroom is the fact that it’s not only perfectly clean afterwards, but it also smells fresh.

You can make it smell even better. Air purifiers may do the job for a while, but there are better and more natural ways. Check out our how to make your home smell amazing guide and find the recipe, which works best for you. After that, just enjoy.
