Bucket
A good comfortable to be carried around bucket is not only a mop’s best friend, but a cleaners too. Keeping everything you may need on hand from detergents to tools, will make the chores much easier.
Not only is it essential for window cleaning, but the squeegee can be put to good work on any tiled surface. Keeping your bathroom tiles moisture free is the best way to prevent mold growth.
Scrubbing Brush
Sometimes you need to force the stain out of the surface. Cloths and sponges while gentle to the latter are insufficient to banish some stains.
Toothbrush
Disinfecting an old toothbrush and keeping it in your cleaning supplies basket will make your day brighter when you need to clean grout.
Dusting Utencils
Dust Cloths
Cotton is one of the best materials for dust cloths. This is mainly because it’s absorbent and traps dust inside it. It’s also soft and won’t damage the surfaces you wipe with it. We suggest using white cloths as it’s easier to see the dirt as you work. You can also machine wash and bleach them. It’s easy to make your own cotton dust cloths from old clothing instead of throwing them out.
Microfiber Cloths
These are awesome for cleaning electronics as they prevent static electricity build up which causes dust to stick to them. That doesn’t mean you can’t use them for generic dusting. Quite contrary. Microfiber cloths are best at that and can also be used with minimal amounts of water. They can be washed and reused many times before you need to change them.
Lambswool Duster
The long wool fibres of this tool attracts dust particles. The handle gives you a longer reach. This tool is perfect for regular dusting and makes it effortless. Cleaning the tool is also very easily done with some twirling or patting.
A Spray Bottle
Spray bottles are indispensable. They make applying water and detergent with precision when needed a breeze. They are thrice more useful if you make your own detergents.
Mops
It’s best to have two of these. One for wet cleaning and wiping out spills, and another for dry cleaning like sweeping dust and gathering pet hair.
Wet MopWe strongly discourage the use of string mops. They are hard to clean with, hard to use, and hard to properly rinse out themselves. The most they do is just smear the dirt around. Look for mops with interchangeable covers, wide head and a swivel base. They are best because they can actually cover both dry and wet cleaning. Use a dry cover to soak up spilled liquids, and soak the other one in detergent solution to make quick work of dissolving dirt. When the cover becomes too soiled you can always change it for a new one! Terry covers are reusable and can be machine washed, so they’ll last you a long time.
Sponge mops are a good option for wiping up spills and general wet cleaning. Especially if you find yourself one with a larger head. Since these are designed for scrubbing and often feature self rinsing mechanisms, make sure they are built sturdily. Especially the mechanism itself. A metal one is sure to last you more than the cheaper plastic alternative.
Dry MopThese come in many forms. Small disposable mops are easy to fit around in hard to reach spaces but don’t do too good of a job and can be flimsy.
Reusable microfiber mops are a cheaper and actually more useful option. Some of them have attachments for washable dry-mop pads to their face. Others come straight out of the packaging with reusable microfiber sheets. They are best used on dry soil or crumbs.
When buying your dry mop pay close attention to the handle and hinges as these are the areas of most stress. Always buy metal over plastic!
A Vacuum
We will forever prefer a regular old human operated vacuum. Roomba’s get the job done, but slowly and never as reliably as you could do it.
