10 Questions With... Rankin

Each week, The Drum talks to a range of media and marketing professionals about their roles, but rarely do they get a chance to show who they are and what drives them as people. The Drum's 10 Questions series attempts to offer a little more insight into those personalities. Answering the questions this week is world-famous photographer, agency founder, and The Drum magazine guest editor, Rankin.

What was your first-ever job?

Weird one, for one of my first jobs I delivered wholesale meat in the St Albans area. It’s strange as I’d literally just tried to be a vegetarian, but my Dad wouldn’t let me and well, I needed the job! Then I was a cleaner, petrol stations were the worst, then a porter in a hospital, but my favourite of first jobs was working as an usher in St Albans Odeon. I can tell you nearly every scene and piece of dialogue in 'Predator'

Which industry buzzword annoys you most?

Buzzword!

Who do you find most interesting to follow on social media?

DJ Fat Tony. He is politically, very incorrect and some of it have to scroll past, but that’s the point of comedy for me, it has to be allowed to push boundaries. I also love Dave Chapelle.

What is the highlight of your career (so far?)

Tomorrow is always the highlight for me.

What piece of tech can you not live without?

My camera.

Who or what did you have posters of on your bedroom wall as a teenager?

The Wombles. They were amazing, great moral examples and they were into 30 years before everyone else. I vividly remember getting the flu around the Xmas of me being about 8 and they all started talking to me as if Bernard Cribbins was in the room. It was very realistic.

In marketing and design, what needs to change soon?

Everything. We're looking backward to move forward and it doesn’t make any sense! This is the data-digital revolution. Bigger than any revolution so far in our history, it has the potential to destroy the planet. So it requires a serious amount of our attention and honesty.

What is (in your opinion) the greatest film/album/book of your life?

I'm the last book I read was a brilliant kind of person, so the last book I loved was...

Which industry event can you not afford to miss each year and why?

I'm pretty new to this, so I enjoy going to them all. Though why so much 'back slapping' lads (and it is a lot of lads), time for a switch up I think!

What's the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Other people's advice is like second-hand clothes, there is no point in wearing them unless you make them your own.
