Memorial Day Weekend is here, and with it comes the unofficial start of Summer. It’s a time to celebrate the joys of summer and honor our fallen war heroes. But it’s also a lot more, especially in a city like Houston, where’s there’s so much to do. Here are a few of the unique and exciting events happening around town this weekend.

Texas State Railroad 17th Annual Salute to the Armed Forces

This patriotic train Honors war veterans through the course of its ride from the Palestine depot to Jarvis Wye and back. Before departing for the hour-long trip, there will be a ceremonial raising of the flag on Saturday and Sunday. On the grounds at Palestine, you’ll be able to take in a variety of booths and exhibits that outline various milestones of military history.

The WWII focused “Able Company” will present the play at the Palestine grounds and the terminus at Jarvis Wye. All military personnel ride free. This is an excellent way to take the entire family on a journey that is fun, educational, and that truly honors the spirit of this holiday weekend.

Flamenco Festival

The temperature isn’t the only thing heating up this month – the dance floor is as well! The Houston Spanish and Flamenco Festival hits town from May 26-28.

Flamenco is one of the greatest Spanish cultural exports, to see a real flamenco performance is nothing short of riveting. This is a fantastic opportunity to witness one the world’s great art forms, taking place at San Jacinto College on the Central Campus.

This festival is for all ages, and it’s one that will truly captivate the entire family.

Typhoon Texas

In the world of water parks, this weekend marks one of the most anticipated openings of the summer. Typhoon Texas, a massive 25-acre property, will open its doors on May 28th. They’re expecting thousands of guests on opening day, and after three years of planning, water park fans are finally going to get to get soaked.

Typhoon Texas will feature nine water rides, 30 types of water slides and a restaurant specializing in Texas Barbeque. This is the ultimate in family fun, with rides built to accommodate the whole crew at once.  There’s also a one of a kind “slide boarding” ride where riders will flow down a dark slide shooting at targets. This one is for the gamers, and it’s sure to be a hit.

Get Chili

On Saturday in Tomball, the Chili Appreciation Society International will present the 5th annual Weekend Chili Challenge. This is a hardcore chili cook-off, and these chili masters are serious.

They’ll be getting their pots going at 9 am, so get there early to see all the action. As with any great food fest, there will be lots of live music, vendors, and a kid’s zone.

It’s time to celebrate summer in Houston. Memorial Day is always one of the best times of year in the Space City, and this year will be no different. Happy Memorial Day Houston!
