Will smartwatches replace smartphones in the future?

In a world where Smartphones are nowadays seen as a must-have asset for every person and child out there, the question remains whether the smartphone platform will continue to rise higher over the next decade. Or will another technology trend take over the platform in the coming years? Years ago, we only had normal phones that could simply make cellular calls, and mobile phones were just big fat devices.

Certain features such as a color screen, limited WRPS internet connectivity, or even the ability to take an image with a 0.1MP smartphone camera used to be a big thing in the past. Who would have ever thought that smartphones would become your personal handheld entertainment system.

The device now entirely replaces the use of having multiple devices as one unit. The sales of compact cameras, dedicated music player and gaming handheld consoles have drastically declined over the years because of smartphones.

So what kind of technology would possess a threat for smartphones you ask? Companies such as Google have already introduced the Google Glass that basically sports a small computer, and a display module to show the visuals for the user. And it wouldn’t be long until another smart glass could have all the features and capabilities of a smartphone with an affordable price tag. It could potentially wipe out smartphones off the market in the next decade.

Another gadget that could potentially replace smartphones in the future is the smartwatch. The smartwatch boom really started to rise after the introduction of Android Wear OS by Google. Apple Watch is also another major attraction today. And while major brands keep releasing new smartwatches every few months, some of them already possess the ability to sport their own SIM connectivity which brings more potential.

The hardware chipset present in most modern smartphones is quite equivalent to the performance of many low/mid-range Android smartphones. It won’t be long until any of the brands release a smartwatch with a high-end quad core processor, and 2-3GB RAM. It even happens so that some Android hardcore developers even managed to run a full-blown Android OS with the Gear S that only had a very modest CPU specification.

So you see, any sort of technology trend could kick off one day, and people might tend to lean towards the new idea. Newer smartphones will always have upgraded specs, more storage, a better camera, bigger display, battery and newer technologies such as fingerprint scanner, eye scanner, or even maybe some ridiculous ideas such as built in printer too. But it’s still a smartphone. Once a company has successfully introduced a new trend of technology, others follow and the popularity will rise. It’s just a matter of time to witness what the future of smartphone will hold.
