3 DIY Cleaning Tactics to Help You Keep the Mattress in Perfect Shape

We spend 1/3 of our lives in bed.

We spend 1/3 of our lives lying in our bed. One would think we would put Mattress cleaning as a priority task in our chores list. However, most of us deal with the mattress only during spring cleaning, and some people – don’t clean it at all. Mattresses absorb stains, spills, dirt, dust, dead skin cells, hair, dust mites, and even worse. This is why maintaining the mattress clean should become important part of your chores. Here is a basic mattress cleaning routine, which will help you keep it in perfect shape and even prolong its life.

Vacuum the mattress every time you are changing your bed linens.

Vacuum The Mattress on Regular Basis

Regular vacuuming removes dead skin cells, hair, dust and other debris from your mattress. Consider a quick vacuuming every time you change your bed linens. Also, every 3 months or so, you can rotate your mattress, so it wouldn’t wear out unevenly. Don’t miss to vacuum under your mattress as well – at least once every month. Do the same when cleaning your upholstery – vacuum regularly to extract dust and dirt from filling and fabric.

If you let your pets in bed then you will probably have to deodorise and clean stains more often.

Deodorizing and Refreshing the Mattress

Over time your bed absorbs various smells beside all the dust and dirt and sometimes it can develop a specific odour. To get rid of unpleasant smells you can add one more step to the mattress cleaning. Before vacuuming the surface sprinkle generous amount of baking soda directly onto the fabric. Leave it for half an hour and then vacuum. Baking soda acts as a natural deodoriser and helps neutralise odours. You can use the same method if you are cleaning your carpet from pet urine – sprinkle baking soda, wait a little, then vacuum.

Eating in bed can get messy.

Remove Spots and Stains from Mattress

There are 3 varieties of stains – tannin, grease and protein. However most often only protein stains end up on your mattress. Bodily fluids like sweat, urine, vomit, and blood are all protein stains. Like any other stain and spill, the sooner you tend the spot, the better chance there is to remove it completely. If the area is wet, blot it gently with a dry towel. Don’t use circular motion, just dab carefully, other wise you will spread the stain on the mattress. Never treat protein stain with hot water, because it will set it into the fabric – use cold, or lukewarm water.

Ue salt to remove protein stains.

Fresh protein stains are easy to remove using mixture of salt and water. You can check the cleaning method described in our previous article 3 Ways to Use Salt When Cleaning Your Home. If you are not happy with the result, then you can prepare a solution from 1 part dish soap and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide. Apply the stain cleaner, brush in gently with a clean brush and blot out the area after 5 minutes with clean damp towel. When cleaning a stain always use as little water as possible, cause mattresses don’t stand well moisture. Dry the area with hair dryer before putting on clean bed sheets.

Deep clean the mattress at least twice a year in order to preserve it as new.

Deep Cleaning of the Mattress

Regular vacuuming, deodorising and removing stains from your mattress are important. However, as every other thing in the house you will have to deep clean your bedding. One of the most efficient methods is with steam. However, we would recommend hiring professional upholstery cleaners to take care of your mattress, instead of doing it by yourself. Cleaning experts utilize powerful professional grade extraction equipment that eliminates all the dirt and microbes while leaving your mattress almost dry after the procedure.
