NFL Sunday Ticket coming to YouTube TV

NFL Sunday Ticket has moved exclusively to YouTube TV.

In December of 2022, the NFL announced a multi-year, $2 billion agreement with Google granting YouTube TV exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. This means that YouTube TV will now be the only NFL Sunday Ticket distributor, starting with the 2023 NFL season.

What is NFL Sunday Ticket?

NFL Sunday Ticket broadcasts NFL regular season games that are unavailable on local affiliate channels. It is appealing for consumers who have a favorite team outside of their local TV market and cannot watch the games through their local channels — like someone in Cincinnati, OH whose favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys, for example.

NFL Sunday Ticket was exclusively broadcast through DIRECTV from 1994 until 2023. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, outbid Apple to win the rights for NFL Sunday Ticket and will begin broadcasting on YouTube TV starting with the 2023 NFL season.

How can I watch NFL Sunday Ticket?

NFL Sunday Ticket will be available as an add-on package on YouTube TV and as a standalone option on YouTube Primetime channels.

The standalone option will allow more people to watch NFL Sunday Ticket because any customer with access to YouTube can sign up, even if they aren’t YouTube TV subscribers. This is a key difference between YouTube and DIRECTV’s offer — in the past, only those who subscribed to DIRECTV could access NFL Sunday Ticket.

YouTube TV is $64.99/mo. and the NFL Sunday Ticket add-on package is estimated to be around $300, but exact pricing details haven’t been announced yet. DIRECTV previously sold NFL Sunday Ticket to customers for $293.94 for a single-season subscription and a premium version for $395.94.

What’s changing?

The price will be different than DIRECTV’s previous offering, and there will be more access options like we mentioned above (add-on or standalone packages). YouTube also states that current YouTube TV subscribers will be eligible for NFL Sunday Ticket special offers this spring, which could mean discounts or other perks.

YouTube and the NFL are also exploring avenues to allow viewers to purchase a certain number of games for a cheaper price.

New features on the way

YouTube’s CEO Neil Mohan recently announced new features that NFL Sunday Ticket viewers can look forward to. According to Mohan, subscribers will be able to see features from YouTube TV added to the YouTube app, like the ability to watch key plays.

“And creators will connect with sports fans through coverage and commentary. NFL Sunday Ticket will also come with ways to engage with other fans, including comments, chats, and polls. Coming later this year to YouTube TV: a new feature that lets viewers watch multiple games at once,” he said.

Wrapping up

Access to NFL Sunday Ticket begins on Sept. 10, 2023, three days after the season’s first game. If you plan on subscribing to YouTube TV, it may be smart to do it soon to take advantage of the special offers coming this spring. If not, you can purchase NFL Sunday Ticket on its own without subscribing to YouTube TV.
