Buying your own cable money can save you money – but you might find it harder to get support. Here are for your options Read more
Buying your own cable modem rather than renting from your provider can save you money in a big way. However, it does come with some risks — in general, you may find it harder to get tech support and perform troubleshooting in case there’s an issue with your service.
And don’t forget you’ll also need a wireless router as well unless you invest in a 2-in-1 combination device.
Cox tells customers: “Only modems and devices purchased or rented directly from Cox are supported by Cox Customer Support. If you obtain your devices from a non-Cox vendor, Cox is not able to support service and technological assistance to these devices.”
Let us translate: if something goes wrong, Cox won’t help you. You’ll still be able to get in touch with the manufacturer of your modem or router, but it may be a little more challenging.
Cox’s flagship modem and router, called the Panoramic, rents for $10.99 more per month ($132 per year) on top of your existing internet costs.
Cox won’t sell you the Panoramic because it “ensures that we have the capability to upgrade the software and firmware on these devices to add functionality and protect and manage devices connected to our network.”
However, it will sell (but not rent) a three-pack of extender pods for the system, called Panoramic Wifi Pods 2.0. They’ll be available for purchase in August 2020What equipment do I need for Cox internet?
The router and modem that you need will depend on the Cox internet plan you choose for your household. Your equipment must be able to support your speeds and number of internet-connected devices. Generally, you can follow this guide to ensure your service is reliable and up-to-par.
DOCSIS 3.1 and older: Cox Gigablast, Ultimate Classic, Internet Preferred 150 and slower
DOCSIS 3.0 and older: Cox Preferred 150
DOCSIS 2.0: Upgrade to 3.0 or 3.1 for optimal speeds
