Home decor color trends, 2023 edition

2023 saw a unique thread of color weave through our experiences. The combinations and trends listed below filled our spaces, influenced our everyday lives and served as outlets of self-expression.

Deep teals and oranges

As we see with almost every year, there's one color combination trend that's bolder than the rest. Think of a stark color combination that catches attention and sets a unique tone.

In 2022, we saw this with evergreen and deep brown, an earthy combination representing balance. This year's combo was deep teal and burnt orange. These complimentary colors pair well and blend harmoniously while catching people's attention due to their deep and saturated hues. Brave interior designers and color wheel experts utilized these colors in decorating and painting this year with colors like Vining Ivy and Canyon Ridge to bring warmth and curate bold spaces.

Crisp whites

While white is not a new trend, it was certainly one that took over the design space this year. In a chaotic world, it can be relaxing to come home to simple spaces. Minimalists, in particular, practice this design theory in their spaces, simplifying the space around them to bring inner calmness. Behr's color of the year selection of Blank Canvas, offered up just that, a blank canvas to bring calmness into a space or a neutral to let other decor shine.

The benefit of utilizing crisp while is the opportunity to decorate freely. With white comes almost any decor of any color to fill your home through the flooring, furniture and various furnishings. There's a comforting versatility that crisp white offers, meaning decor can change at any time for any reason.

Saturated and mixed neutrals

Neutrals really never go out of style, and this year was no different. Utilizing neutrals carried through the year and we even saw deeper neutrals worked into design. This year brought a lot of changes, especially as we came out of a pandemic, emphasizing the need to draw close to comfort and things that we know.

While embracing comfort doesn't sound like a trend, doing this isn't exactly easy especially when sticking to what we know and like can feel boring. Comforting warm neutrals like beige, cream and stone were there for us when we needed them, serving as grounding colors to lean into or decorate around easily.

Pink dominance

A new neutral emerged in popularity this year, beigy-blush. Pink crept its way into interior design through the Barbiecore trend, which assisted in the emergence of this new color. This neutral beige with pink undertones offered up an exciting way to make your neutral wall pop a little more than it would with a plainer, more understated neutral. Redend Point, Sherwin Williams 2023 color of the year, is a harmonious blend of beige and pink, perfect for an accent wall or room color that's outside the ordinary.

Pink was really everywhere this year, making it hard to avoid and easy to consume. Around the release of the Barbie movie, we especially noticed a notable spike in the dominating color pink. Viva Magenta, Raspberry Blush and Terra Rosa are just some of the color of the year selections that shined through during the Barbiecore movement.

Nature-inspired jewel tones

This year saw a lot of jewel tones, rich shades of teal and dark hues of green. These are known as cooling shades and are said to make people feel grounded when they're surrounded by these colors. This year's utilization of jewel tones and other earthy shades, like warm brown or deep green, blends luxury feel with soothing color, making them the perfect tones for a home.

2023: the year of living boldly

The overarching theme of the interior design trends of 2023 is living boldly. Whether it's utilizing rich tones to invoke excitement, sticking with old neutrals to express creativity through decor or embracing the many shades of pink, 2023 taught us to work outside of our comfort zone. When you step out of the box and use bold colors or decorate using multiple color families, you're sure to spice up your space and breathe new life into your lifestyle.
