Is Casper Nova Hybrid Snow a Good Mattress for You?

Before you spend your time reading this review, I’d like to help you figure out if this mattress could work for your specific sleep needs. Depending on your body type, preferred sleeping position, and whether or not you sleep with a partner or pet, this mattress may or may not be right for you. Take a look at some of my recommendations below.

Who I recommend the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow mattress for

  • Unsurprisingly, I love this mattress for hot sleepers! It’s loaded with cooling technology, from its cover to comfort layers. If you’re sick of waking up sweaty each morning, this could be the bed you’ve been looking for.
  • I think side sleepers are going to really like this mattress. I’m a side sleeper myself, and I was a big fan of this bed. Side sleepers can form pressure points at their hips and shoulders on the wrong mattress, but I felt wonderfully cradled on this bed.
  • Couples could be quite happy on this bed, especially if you both prefer a softer feel. This mattress has low motion transfer, so you won’t feel your partner tossing and turning at night, and its cooling tech is a great perk since two people produce double the body heat.

Who I don’t recommend Casper Nova Hybrid Snow mattress for

  • Stomach sleepers aren’t going to get what they need from this bed. The Nova Hybrid Snow is a soft mattress, and stomach sleepers need a firm mattress that will prevent their hips from sinking too far into the bed and out of line with their shoulders.
  • I wouldn’t readily recommend this bed to heavy sleepers. I think they’ll sink right through the comfort layers, and find themselves pressed up against the pocketed coils. If that’s you, I’d recommend one of our best mattresses for heavy people.

What Does the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Feel Like?

Ok, so now that you have a pretty good idea of whether or not the Nova Hybrid Snow is going to work for your specific sleep needs, I want to discuss how it actually feels. I’m going to start with firmness, since it’s the first thing that comes to mind for most when discussing overall mattress feel. Keep in mind that firmness is subjective, and depends on factors like your body weight and preferred sleep position. For reference, I’m a side sleeper who weighs about 110 lb.

To help get the most objective view of firmness possible I polled a range of folks in the office and took the average of our scores.

The Casper Nova Hybrid Snow is a soft mattress.

After spending time rolling around on the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow, my colleagues and I decided to give it a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This means that this is a true soft mattress.

This firmness level is ideal for side sleepers. It will allow their hips and shoulders to sink in enough to keep their spines in a straight line, which is the healthiest position. However, this firmness level is much too soft for strict stomach sleepers. These sleepers need a firm bed to keep their hips from sinking into the mattress, which can lead to back pain over time. I always steer these sleepers to our best mattress for stomach sleepers roundup, which has a host of firm beds that will suit their needs.

I think this bed could work for back sleepers who are looking for an ultra plush feel. I typically recommend back sleepers go with a mattress with a firmness level of 6.5 (the industry standard for medium-firm) or higher, since they will want some added support to keep their spines in a straight line. However, if you really like that soft feel, this could be a great bed for you. I also think back and side combination sleepers could be really happy on this bed, since it has some nice bounce that makes switching positions pretty easy.

Testing the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress

To give you a more objective look at the Nova Hybrid Snow, I’m going to share how it performed on our Sleepopolis tests for pressure relief, motion transfer, and edge support. Don’t worry if you’re unsure what those terms mean, I’m going to describe them in detail below.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief refers to how well a mattress alleviates tension at sensitive areas at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. It’s especially important to find a mattress with good pressure relief if you suffer from hip pain or shoulder pain, as it will help prevent pain from worsening.

To measure pressure relief, I put what we call a pressure map on top of the mattress. Then, I hopped on and rolled around in different positions. The map measures how much pressure is exerted and creates an image. Blue indicates the lowest pressure, green shows medium-low pressure, yellow means medium-high pressure, and red indicates very high pressure.

The Nova Hybrid Snow’s pressure map results.

Back – The map is all blue here, which is a good sign, and shows that my body weight was evenly distributed. However, average weight sleepers would likely see a bit more pressure here than I did as a very lightweight sleeper.

Side – Again, the map is all blue, which is great. I think the Nova Hybrid Snow is a great bed for side sleepers.

Stomach – Though this may seem a bit counterintuitive since the map is again, all blue, it has to do with my low body weight. Larger individuals are going to get more sinkage than I experienced, especially at the hips. Overall, this mattress is too soft for stomach sleepers.

Note for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb) – If you’re a heavy sleeper, you’re not going to find what you need in this mattress. It’s going to feel much softer to you than it would to average or lightweight sleepers. Instead, I’d opt for a firmer bed or one that was specifically designed to support higher body weights.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is the movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. It’s important for couples or those who sleep with a pet, since neither will want to be disturbed by their bedmate’s movements.

To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from three different heights that are meant to mimic movements you’re likely to experience in bed, like tossing and turning and getting up out of bed. I measured the results of each drop by placing a seismometer on the opposite side of the bed.

The Nova Hybrid Snow has low motion transfer.

I was really impressed with the Nova Hybrid Snow’s motion isolation. Sleepers are unlikely to feel their partner’s movement on their side of the bed on this mattress.

Note on Motion Transfer and Sex — Though low motion transfer typically means low responsiveness, which is bad for sex, this mattress manages to isolate motion while maintaining bounce. This is great news for couples, who will want a mattress that is easy to move around on, but won’t transfer all their movements to their partner’s bedside.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well a mattress holds up on the sides as compared to the center. On a mattress with good edge support, you’ll feel just as supported lying on the edge of the bed as you would in the middle.

This Casper mattress had okay edge support. It wasn’t the best I’ve seen. This can affect the bed’s durability, as good edge support helps prevent sagging.

What is the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Made Of?

The Casper Nova Hybrid Snow is the brand’s new ultra cooling and breathable version of the original Nova Hybrid. It’s made with a combination of foam layers and pocketed coils and has a height of 12 inches.

Mattress Cover – The Nova Hybrid Snow has a QuickCool cover that is infused with Phase Change Material. This material helps absorb body heat and is considered the gold standard for cooling covers.

Comfort Layer – The top layer is made from the brand’s proprietary Airscape foam, and it has a cooling gel coating on top of it. Casper uses AirScape foam in almost all its beds — it is perforated to promote airflow. This layer also offers some nice pressure relief and contouring.

Second Comfort Layer – Below is another layer of AirScape foam that has zoned support to be softer at the shoulders and feet and firmer at the hips to promote a healthy spinal alignment. This layer also has six HeatDelete bands that help draw heat away from the body.

Transition Layer – This mattress has another zoned support layer that has seven ergonomic zones, which further promotes a straight spinal alignment in a range of sleeping positions.

Support Layer – Last up is a layer of pocketed coils that offer some nice added support. This layer is also surrounded by a firm foam edge support layer which helps keep the mattress in place and offers more stability.

My Final Thoughts about Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress

Now that we’ve discussed the Nova Hybrid Snow mattress in detail, I want to leave you with some final thoughts to help you decide if it’s the right bed for you.

My favorite things about Casper Nova Hybrid Snow mattress

This mattress is one of the best cooling mattresses on the market. Its cooling system has some of the most cooling features I’ve seen in a single mattress. I also really like this mattress for side sleepers. As a side sleeper myself, I really liked how much my hips and shoulders sank into this bed.

My Casper Nova Hybrid Snow mattress complaints

Though I am a big fan of this bed personally, I don’t think strict stomach sleepers will be happy with it. I’d steer them to a firmer mattress that will help keep their hips from sinking too far into the bed. I also wouldn’t recommend this mattress for heavy people — it doesn’t have great edge support to support larger body types, and its comfort layers won’t offer them the extra support they need.

Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Vs

Before you decide to trade in your old mattress for the Nova Hybrid Snow, you might want to see how it stacks up to some other comparable models from other popular online mattress brands.

Nova Hybrid Snow vs GhostBed Luxe

  • Like the Nova Hybrid Snow, the GhostBed Luxe is super cooling. It has a phase change material cover (like the Nova) and a layer of gel-infused memory foam.
  • The GhostBed Luxe is firmer than the Nova Hybrid Snow and is a better choice for strict back sleepers.
  • The GhostBed Luxe is less expensive than the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow.

Nova Hybrid Snow vs Bear Pro

  • The Bear Pro is also a cooling mattress. It has a cover made from Celliant, which adds some nice breathability, and its memory foam layer is infused with copper to help dispel body heat.
  • The Bear Pro is just a bit firmer than the Nova Hybrid Snow (though it’s softer than the GhostBed Luxe, for reference).
  • The Bear Pro is significantly cheaper than the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow.

Other Models from Casper

Take a look at some of the other mattress models you can find on Casper.com.

Nova Hybrid Snow vs Wave Hybrid Snow

  • The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is another mattress in Casper’s new cooling collection and is made with the same Snow Technology as the Nova.
  • The Wave Hybrid Snow mattress feels slightly firmer than the Nova.
  • The Wave Hybrid is more expensive than the Nova Hybrid.

Nova Hybrid Snow vs Casper Original

  • The Nova Hybrid Snow is a hybrid mattress built with foam layers and coils while the Casper Original is an all-foam mattress.
  • The Original Casper doesn’t have the same cooling technology as the Nova Hybrid Snow, so if you’re worried about overheating I’d go with the Nova.
  • The Casper Original is significantly cheaper than the Nova Hybrid Snow.
