DIY: Lagoon Mohair Brocéliande Headband by Audrey Borrego

The Lagoon Mohair Brocéliande Headband by Audrey Borrego is a great stash buster. It uses only 60 to 80 metres of aran weight yarn and has an easy four row repeat, called the Waffle Rib. For this headband, I held two strands together: one Cascade 220 in Lagoon and one Flocon Lace in Lagoon. The two yarns are different colours (one is turqoise, the other a royal blue) but the colourways have the same name! Matching two colours in a project can be intimidating, but once I saw the matching names, my choice was easy.

This Lagoon Mohair Brocéliande Headband is a size 1 and uses 4.0mm / US 6 needles. The easy repetition of the Waffle Rib means customizing both the length and the width straightforward. If you choose to make yours larger, be mindful of the additional yarn length required.

This is my first pattern from Audrey Borrego, a French knitwear designer. She has an impressive 122 items in her Ravelry shop! Pom Pom Quarterly published this pattern in Issue 38: Autumn 2021 in a warm peachy colourway.

The original pattern uses a cotton-merino aran weight yarn called Katia Concept Cotton Merino. It has a lovely tonal colour and interesting texture that I didn’t quite have in my stash. Instead, I substituted the aran weight for a worsted wool and a laceweight mohair blend. The yarns held together create a simililary interesting effect to the headband. In addition, replacing the cotton with mohair makes a warmer accessory. Not surprisingly, we usually try to add extra warmth to our projects against the cold Canadian winters!

The finishing for the headband is a knotted seam, which is easy to do but creates an attractive twist at the top of your head.

See our other Pom Pom Quarterly projects here. The pink fingerless gloves in the picture are called Fallberry Mitts.
