These Turion Mittens by Linda Dubec are the first pair of mittens I’ve made. I was a bit nervous to start because of Second Sock Syndrome, but this was not the case at all. Actually, it was the opposite – after I completed the first mitten, I was excited to start the second because I’d worked out all the complicated bits already. Just make sure you knit one for each hand!

I used Wellington Fibres 3 ply 60/40 Worsted Spun yarn for these mittens. It is a 60% mohair 40% wool mix in the Wellington Wine colourway. The fibre mix makes a strong, shiny, and warm yarn that works well for a pair of mittens. Mohair takes dye very well and the result is this rich deep wine colour, a signature of Wellington Fibres.

Wellington Fibres is the first working fibre mill that I’ve visited. Meinhilde and I stopped here a few years ago on a local yarn excursion. We visited the shop and viewed the mill, which was smaller than I expected. Wellington is one of few local mills and many local yarn producers use these facilities, so I expected it to be bigger. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the creation of all the lovely new yarns.

The mitten pattern is Turion by Linda Dubec from Pom Pom Quarterly, Issue 18: Autumn 2016. I knit these for myself and made it in size one using size US 7 or 4.5mm dpns. The Turion Mittens have some interesting features, such as minor cabling and a fun bauble embellishment.

I made one small adjustment to the pattern. Since wrists are often at risk of a chill in the deep Canadian winter, I extended the cuff to double the recommended length until they measured 8cm (3 in). I recommend this adjustment if you have cold winters and chilly wrists! Just make sure you have enough yarn to extend the cuff on both mittens.

If the yarn looks familiar, it is. Last year I completed the Mohair Entrelac Headband in a similar shade of Wellington’s mohair mix yarn. I highly recommend using a mohair blend yarn. Mohair adds strength to this high-action accessory and the halo gives an extra warm comfort. That means you likely won’t have to darn these mittens in high-use areas as often as if you were using 100% wool.
