The Lucy Hat by Carina Spencer has been in my favourites list on Ravelry for years, even before I learned to knit! So I was very happy to finally knit it for one of our Etsy customers. She requested a hat in a pink/red theme, so after a bit of back and forth, she decided on a pink brim and body, and a red hatband.
I used about 200 m of Knitting for Olive Merino in the Flamingo colourway for the brim and body of the hat. I used about 12 m of Sweet Paprika Designs Minuet in the Canneberge colourway for the hat band. The hat band is part of the hat itself, and it looks almost like velvet! The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, so I held the pink fingering weight yarn double to get gauge. I love our customer’s choice of a hand-dyed yarn for the hat band, as it has a beautiful depth of colour. It also nicely contrasts against the solid pink of the main part of the hat.
You knit the Lucy Hat bottom up in the round in one piece. Despite the stylish brim, I knit it very quickly. The pattern includes two sizes, for 20″ and 22″ circumferences. I knit the 20″ size which still fits heads up to 24″ due to the stretch of the fabric.
The hat pattern calls for 4.0 mm needles, but I used 3.25 mm needles instead. Due to my loose gauge, I always size down my needles. The hat constructs the asymmetrical garter stitch brim using wrap and turn short rows. Since the brim is garter stitch, the wraps hide and you don’t need to pick them up. This would be a great way to get started with short row construction!
The Lucy Hat hatband uses a beautiful woven stitch pattern that gives a beautiful contrasting texture to the hat. I definitely want to use this stitch pattern again!
