DIY: Pink Moss and Deer Horns Hat by Sylvia McFadden

The Pink Moss and Deer Horns Hat by Sylvia McFadden is a simple but pretty weekend project. It has a ribbed brim, a one-repeat cable design, and the rest of the hat is knit in stockinette. I knit this one up in one snowy weekend during the winter.

The Pink Moss and Deer Horns Hat is my first project with a design by Sylvia McFadden. It is published in issue 8 of Pom Pom Quarterly (Spring 2014). This is one of my favourite issues of PPQ- I want to make each of the eight featured designs. It is rare that I like all the patterns in a book or magazine, but this issue has such lovely delicate pastel patterns. I’m generally not a pastel person and have almost none in my wardrobe, but the look of this issue is beautiful and makes me reconsider.

The yarn is Fleece & Harmony Signature in Red Rose, which I purchased at the Knitter’s Frolic a few years ago. Fleece & Harmony Woolen Mill is run by two sisters in PEI. Signature is a 40% Corriedale sheep’s wool and 60% Rideau Arcott lambs’ wool in aran weight. The colourways are rich and vibrant.

I didn’t follow the pattern requirements exactly. Instead of the recommended worsted weight, I used a heavier aran. In addition, I chose a smaller needle (4.0 mm – US 6) instead of the recommended 4.5mm – US 7. The thicker yarn and smaller needles still produced an adult female large size, just as I intended. Doesn’t it look great on Meinhilde?

Our other PPQ projects are featured here.

You can purchase the hat in our Etsy shop here.
