DIY: Knit Blue Coastline Trio Hat by Carrie Bostick Hoge

This blue Coastline Trio Hat is made in a worsted wool and made a really quick knit. I used a rich blue wool purchased from the Mariposa Woolen Mill, which is located near Lindsay, Ontario. We visited the farm last year on our way to visit family, which is about one and a half hours outside of Toronto. We stopped there in the summer and took the self-guided educational farm tour.

After the tour, we visited the animals, which contain six heritage flocks of sheep and one herd of angora goats. There is also a farm shoppe, which sells the yarn and other wool products, plus some local foods. Meinhilde and I bought some cheese and of course some yarn. I selected a few bright coloured skeins, while Meinhilde chose a heritage breed Jacob skein.

The Blue Coastline Trio hat is from issue 4 Lines of Making Magazine, the smallest project in the trio. There is also a scarf and a throw pattern.

This was a very quick knit as I made it in one weekend. Most of my projects take about a month and some larger ones have taken me several months. It was very satisfying to complete a project in such a short time.

The twisted rib stitch is easy to memorize, which makes this a good project to knit with company. In this case, I knit a large portion of it while on a virtual meeting with friends.

The skein has 109 metres and contained just enough for the hat. I played yarn chicken with the skein and lost. Since I only had one skein of blue, I finished the three remaining rows in a rich green, also from Mariposa. However, the next day I decided that I could win this yarn chicken game. To do this, I frogged the green portion plus a few rows of the blue. I accelerated the decreases from the original pattern and it worked. I was able to finish the hat in blue.

For the pom pom, I used some Twin Oaks Farm BFL x Romney Lopi that I had left over from my white Fidra hat, similar to this one. The wool is lopi, so it is very fluffy and ideal for a pom pom. I also used a basic hand held fabric steamer to fluff it up. This is very satisfying and makes the puffiest and fullest pom pom I’ve ever made.
