DIY: Knit Etobicoke Hat and Free Pattern by Kiku Corner

Etobicoke is an inner suburb of Toronto. Southern Etobicoke, which borders Lake Ontario, has numbered streets, from First Street all the way to Forty Second Street. Those ordered streets inspired this hat with its regular bands of stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch.

To make the Etobicoke Hat larger into a slouchy beanie, simply add repeats of the 8-row purl and knit design. Although as the hat is only in one size for adults, you can easily customize it if you want to make a smaller hat for children or babies. Use smaller needles and thinner Yarn to make this hat for smaller heads. Or, since the decreases are in 10-stitch repeats, cast on fewer stitches in multiples of 20.

Knit from the bottom up, this hat contains a simple design that is perfect for showcasing tonal hand-dyed yarn.

We are offering this hat for free because the yarn that I used, Valentina Colour Works, is no longer available. It was the house-dyed yarn from the yarn shop Mouline in Montreal, which is now closed. I used this beautiful yarn for one of the Berlin Hat samples that I crocheted, and fell in love with it. Instead of knitting the hat in different yarn and selling the pattern, we’re still offering it for free because many people might be struggling right now.

To substitute the yarn, use any DK-weight wool or wool-blend yarn. Something with alpaca or silk added will add to the soft drape of the finished hat fabric.
