Choosing the Perfect Pillow

Finding the perfect pillow is key to getting a great night’s sleep.

While a fantastic mattress and high quality bed linens are important in making a comfortable bed, understanding how to choose the right Pillow plays just as important of a role. You might be able to sleep fall asleep without the perfect pillow, but to get a truly great night of sleep – every night, you’ll need the support of a pillow that’s just right.

Start with identifying what kind of sleeper you are: side, stomach, or back

We all know how important a good posture is when standing or sitting, and the same goes for sleeping. A pillow should allow your head to rest squarely on your shoulders, and ensure that it is not too far forward, or too far back.

Side sleepers will usually find the most comfort with a pillow that fills the space between your ear and shoulder. Our gusseted pillows with a medium fill and up should do the trick, as they are made to provide loft and support.

If you’re a stomach sleeper, you’ll want a pillow with minimal thickness, as any additional loft will throw your head backwards, leading to Neck Pain. Cuddledown offers a “stomach” fill for every pillow – this option has the least amount of fill, and as the name suggests, is perfect for stomach sleepers.

Many of our customers who are stomach sleepers swear by our 800 Fill Power European White Goose Down Pillow!

Similarly to a stomach sleeper – a pillow with too much loft will create neck pain for back sleepers, but too little fill won’t provide enough support. A medium filled pillow should be perfect, but those looking for a little extra support may want to go with overfill. For starters try our signature 700 Fill Power European White Goose Down!

Now, lets discuss some of the different components of a pillow…

Fill: Down vs Synthetic

True down products are filled with clusters that are fluffy, soft, and quill-free. A common misconception is that down and down/feather blends are one and the same. While feathers can provide firmness, their hard quills can interrupt the blissful sleep you crave.

We offer 600 through 1000 fill power down pillows at Cuddledown – the higher the fill power, the more luxurious a pillow is considered to be.

Hypoallergenic and irritant-free down alternative fill is the next best thing to down itself.

Our down alternative is made with fibers that loft, cluster, and even look like 500 fill power down. Our synthetic pillows tend to be a bit firmer than our down, so give one a try if you’re looking for extra loft!

Fabrics: Twill, Sateen, Batiste, Silk

All Cuddledown pillow fabrics are double-stitched, downproof, and made from 100% cotton. Our basic cotton twill fabric is excellent quality at a great price. If you’re not one to use pillowcases, our patterned pillows such as damask stripe and dobby square fabrics offer simple, elegant style.

If you crave a little more decadence, our sateen fabric is silky smooth and also provides an incredibly soft feel.

For total luxury, our batiste fabric is lightweight, breathable, and is the lightest downproof fabric in the world. We use this special fabric for our Luxury pillows!

And if you’re in the mood for something even more indulgent, our heirloom German silk is used for our Ultimate pillows, which will have you feeling like royalty when you rest your head on it.

Support: Gusseted or non-gusseted?

A gusset is an extra piece of material that helps strengthen and expand a fabric product. For our pillows, a gusset is a side panel in between the top and bottom pieces of fabric, whereas a non-gusseted pillow has the top and bottom sewn together.

Stick with a traditional pillow if you want your head to sink in when you lay down at night, but choose gusseted if you’re looking for the best pillow for neck pain, or want a firmer pillow that will hold its shape.

If you need targeted relief that the aforementioned pillows can’t provide, maybe it’s time for one our sleep solution pillows – designed to relieve snoring, sore muscles and more.
