If there’s one thing that defines “rustic” décor, it’s rugged, natural looking wood. And while your access to aesthetically-interesting wood may depend on where you live, you can definitely start small by selecting cabinets, nightstands, chairs, and small storage chests with a rustic style to help accent the overall feel of your home.

Fortunately, one of the good things about rustic décor is that a natural, exposed look lends itself to a lot of home settings, so even a few small pieces can add a depth of character to an otherwise empty space. Don’t be shy – bedrooms, living rooms, even the kitchen can all benefit from the natural look of wood.

If you’re feeling particularly crafty, and want to try building something yourself, you can try using reclaimed wood to create a unique headboard for your bedroom, an exciting coffee table, bookshelf, or wine rack from used pallets.

If you’re able, try using a piece of wood close to your natural surroundings for added sentimentality and personal touch. When you’re able to give a story behind a piece, it makes everything all the more unique and interesting.

For those who are feeling ambitious, try using reclaimed wood to make bunk beds for children, or even sliding barn doors for a rustic entryway. The possibilities are endless!

You can even use spare pieces of twine or rope to make small trinkets like candle holders – not everything has to be wood after all. Use your imagination and express yourself!
