50 Must Know Interior Design Trends

When decorating your home it can often hard to find inspiration or ideas, so we have put together 50 of this year's must-know Interior Design trends.

1 - Flowers

From spontaneous bunches to dramatic displays, its all about styling flowers in a the most lifelike ways possible, respecting nature’s character to promote a natural aesthetic. Even the most carefully organised bouquet should exude this sense of freedom… look to wild foliage, like fern and vine leaves to add shape. Simple country garden flowers such as cornflowers, love-in-a-mist, daisies and sweet peas are tied into natural, informal clusters for a 'just-picked' look that's very popular this year – as seen at British Flowers Week.

Whether you decide to have fresh or faux flowers in your home you will need to bring them to life transform the atmosphere of any room with this simple but stunning vase by LSA.

LSA Mixed Flower Bouquet Vase, £38.00

2 - My home is my bed

Furniture all over the home is drawing inspiration from our favourite room of the house, the bedroom, creating oh-so cosy settings in every room. Plump sofas, and fabrics that mimic bed linin. These softer living environments bring a new sense of comfort to the home. Padded surfaces abound.  Inspired by the classic sofa shape, Alessi London have produced this fun weather resistant plastic sofa that it is hard wearing and durable. Available inside and out, the large range of pastel colours means there is a model to fit all spaces.

3 - The new tartan

Traditional Scots tartan is reinvented in right colourays, scaled down checks and slightly distorted twists on the original design. Bright, colour pop and candy colour ways help inject new freshness to traditional heritage checks, while subtle tonal designs and blurred repeats refresh interiors while acknowledging tradition.  Sticking with tradition this rocking horse is the perfect addition to any child's room, Rufus the horse is dressed in a textured chocolate and cream woven check fabric, with a softly padded brown leatherette saddle and bridle.

Little Bird Told Me Rufus & Ted Rocking Horse, £120.00

4 - Exotic skins Zebra stripes, leopard spots and a variety of other exotic animal skins continue to cover interiors, from the every day to indulgently luxe. From S/S 15 and Pre-Fall 15 catwalks to interiors, playful scales and mix-and-match skins make for a fresh take on the animal pattern. Go wild with this timeless look, from bed linens and decorative trays to rugs, shower curtains and even wallpaper.  If animal skins aren't your thing this unique and quirky Diva Lucia Lamp Table is sure to add some humour to your home and spark conversation with your guests!

iBride Diva Lucia Ostrich Lamp Table, £820.00

5 - Waffle weaves In keeping with the season’s love affair with all things soft and comforting, waffle weaved fabrics are big news this season, adding an important tactility to textiles. On a practical level, the structure of the waffle weave makes kitchen and bath towels more absorbent while also allowing them to dry more quickly, as it lets the air flow through the fibres. On an emotional level, they feel so good!

6 - Ladders Product designers, interior stylists, visual merchandisers and innovative homemakers are all currently inspired by ladder structures for countless uses, from holding bathroom towels to displaying plants and prized decorative accessories. Old up cycled wooden ladders are given new life as shelves, either free standing or secured to walls. A great way to great your very own, totally bespoke and on-trend piece.

The Aldsworth shelf ladder is a great designer piece with an authentic rustic feel that can be used both indoors and out.

Garden Trading Aldsworth Shelf Ladder, £135.00

7 - Bathing funtime And you thought rubber duckies were for kids? Think again. This season, the best designed bathrooms are all about quirky, cool accessories inspired by the animal kingdom, and fantastical creatures from the wildest imaginations. The idea is to make the space more personal and inviting, as well as adding colour and playfulness with small objects such as soap dishes, toilet brushes and organisers.  The Alessi London toilet brush may not add any "fun" to your bathroom but it's sleek mirrored finish is a must have in any home.

Alessi Birillo Toilet Brush in Stainless Steel, £70.00

8 - Words Have your say when it comes to your world of interiors – and we mean that literally. Single-letter and initial prints are increasingly popular across a variety of items, from ceramics and cushions, to statement rugs, plates and lampshades. Look for pieces inspired old books, typewriter fonts and calligraphy.

Add some carnival character to your home with a 13” LED letter light and choose from either rust or silver to compliment or contrast with your own home décor.

13" LED Industrial Carnival Lights, £50.00

9 - Go nomad In recent seasons, there has been a surge in nomadic design solutions for the kitchen and bathroom, allowing people more flexibility and freedom in the set up of their home. Our increasingly dynamic lifestyles and smaller spaces result in us demanding more flexibility from our environments. This has resulted in designers creating bath and kitchen units that can be easily moved between rooms, even homes, for a less formal and open experience. Movable all-in-one kitchen units can also go from inside to outdoors, enabling hosts to cook full meals among their guests, prepare meals in the garden, or take the party almost anywhere.  Matching this "go nomad" style perfectly is this storage system, an example of pure harmony of form and function.

Verpan Barboy Storage Unit, £1010.00

10 - All the trimmings

Tassels and pompoms are perfect for adding a playful, hand crafted aesthetic to your home. Neutral coloured mini pompoms create a more elegant look, while bright, colour pop versions can add a simple but striking finish to everything from curtains and cushions, to throws and ties.

11 - Geometric patterns

Bold shapes such as hexagons, arrows, rhombus shapes, shards and concentric formations are used alone or in repeating patterns. This season, designer are taking inspiration from modern art and historical cultures as brands celebrate simple, smooth-lined shapes, enlivened with optical effects, colour and new materials.  This dining table and chairs could be mistaken for a piece of modern art, its unique design has an oval elliptical shape and a thick column base and features an extending automatic mechanism, which rotates out extensions on either side of the table simultaneously.

Calligaris Odyssey Extending Dining Table, £2808.00

12 - Houndstooth

From Coco Chanel’s classic two-piece, to your home. This very stylish pattern has walked from the catwalk into the world of interiors, and one of the key prints to look out for this season. Smart houndstooth is rendered in black and white in variations of micro and macro scale across interiors products, adorning a wide range of surfaces, from tufted rugs and screen-printed bedding to lighting and dinnerware.  To complement your black and white pieces you can add these slate placemats that have been hand cut by craftsmen in Scotland.

Just Slate set of 2 Placemats, £22.00

13 - The sensual boudoir

As the need for personal downtime is increasingly recognised, the bedroom is becoming a sanctuary in which to retire and rest our senses. Soft, tactile materials are introduced to create an inviting, comfortable and sleep-inducing environment. Indulge in dramatic chandeliers, sumptuous fabrics like velvet and silk, and put as much emphasis on indulgence as you do relaxation.

Add some “wow factor” to your bedroom with this stunningly delicate chandelier, which will bring more than just a glimmer of drama above your bed. Venus have created a visual masterpiece with this one of a kind design.

Venus Nickel Chandelier, £625.00

14 - Put your name to it

Once the preserve of the rich and jet set, monogramming is now a trend we can all embrace. Following the popularity of customised fashion accessories (and indeed soft drinks – think Coca Cola), monogramming is now a burgeoning trend among home ware and interior design. Make your favourite pieces your own by adding your personal signature.  Add your name to your own beer with this brewing kit, a great present or treat yourself and share your own beer with your friends and guests.

Brooklyn Brew Shop Beer Making Kit, £42.50

15 - Outer space

Outer space is becoming a rich source of creative inspiration for product design, fuelled by the approaching reality of space tourism, the fascinating images from NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity and the popularity of astronomy TV shows, as well as vintage Star Trek and vintage movies. Own a piece of real outer space, as space photography is used to create high-definition galaxy and constellation photo prints on decorative accessories, from bed linen to wallpaper.

16 - Cool bed linen

Your sheets have never been chicer. Craft is central to the Artisan bedding direction, worked in patchwork-inspired designs as well as top stitched, chequered and striped patterns. Use tones of denim blue, lumberjack red, khaki green, stone grey and chalk. Also look out for pieces reflecting the ‘offbeat’ trend; Saturated colour and pattern clashes come together in vibrant and playful design, as tomato red, apple greens and soda pink are toned down by off-white, deep blue and beluga grey.

17 - It’s all about you… The era of the selfie has brought about a lifestyle in which consumers photograph themselves more than ever, creating a market for increasingly sophisticated grooming kits and facilities. Our furniture needs to adapt to this lifestyle shift, and so designers are zooming in on the details of beauty rituals, turning their attention to jewellery, vanity kits, and fabulously flattering mirrors and lighting. Basically, your environment needs to enhance the beauty of you. What’s not to love?  Be selfie ready in seconds with this compact, portable, magic mirror that amazingly turns in to a floor length mirror!  Non glass, lightweight and completely travel safe, this mirror is festival and holiday friendly.

18 - Stag’s heads

From the grandest country houses to your perhaps slightly more humble abode, this season the best dressed homes will be adorned with a dramatic stag’s head. Naturally we’re not talking those garnered through blood sports, but rather resin or wooden versions. Add ‘wow’ factor to the plainest of walls with one of these majestic beasts.

Create a talking point in your hallway with this fun and functional moose head wall hook, designed to hold your coats, scarves, keys, jewellery and other loose accessories.

19 - Giddy up

In recent years, a raft of designers from Stella McCartney to Marc Jacobs have been using horses in their fashion campaigns, and this season, the trend for all things horsey has made it into our homes. From aged pieces of tack, to brasses and equine inspired art, it’s an elegant way to channel the country heritage trend, which is here to stay.  Introduce your baby to their first horse with this hanging mobile, but it's not just for the nursery - its a piece of art - perfect for the living room or bedroom and a definite talking point whenever it is seen.

Horse Nursery Mobile by Christian Flensted, £14.50

20 - Linear wood

This is a trend that’s being seen in high end boutiques and niche shops, but is also now making its way into our homes. It’s about wood being used in linear formations to create striking interiors that allow products to stand out in new and interesting ways. Vertically arranged slats and linear frames can help to create the illusion of depth within a space. Raw timber works best, even plywood.  Speaking of striking interiors, these shelves are stylish yet utilitarian, they have a universal appeal and look fabulous with any style of décor.

String Shelving - Shelves, £77.00

21 - NeoCon 2015 NeoCon is the largest interior design event in the USA. Designers from all over the world, from contract designers to those who specialise in hospitality, workplace and public spaces, flock here every June to discover the latest trends and looks for the coming seasons. Here are just a few of the hottest, must-know trends to emerge…

22 - Integrated technology Technology is essential to today's contract interiors.  Brands explore new solutions to discreetly yet efficiently integrate it within designs.  For example take this simple pencil, hidden within it's design is Apple's advanced technology.  The Bluetooth stylus for the iPad allows you to keep the creating flow going without having to switch tools.  Bluetooth allows the Pencil to effortlessly connect with your device, no confusing scroll down menus or long winded set up methods. Just charge, and go.

23 - Residential meets contract Making your home office look like work. High-end fabrics are borrowed from the residential market to bring a refined touch to increasingly hybrid work and home offices.  Kartell specialise in creating a range of furniture for your home.  Part of their range of desks and tables come the Spoon Table - a simple but highly classic and modern table that can be used for a variety of purposes.  Use it as a dining table or an office desk, use it indoors and outdoors - however you use it, it is guaranteed to look fabulous.

24 - Daring colour For work and for home, designers are introducing more vibrant and saturated hues into palettes for new collections.  These daring colours have even taken over your treat time tableware, adding vibrancy and bold colour to the simple ice-cream bowl.  Alessi London know just how to add that perfect pop of colour.

25 - Gentleman’s club Refined textiles, retro shapes and leather details bring a gentlemanly look to contract and work spaces. Suiting-like fabrics featuring houndstooth, check and herringbone designs are used for upholstery and panelling.

26 - Flat pack’s back The ‘I did it myself!’ look is officially on trend! Contemporary offices are required to respond to the need for ever-changing spaces and workstations, and flat-pack furniture offers an easy and effective solution.  Inspired by the papercraft Origami, this side table is simple, unique and eye catching. The beautifully crafted frame supports a round glass top adding another depth and interest to the table and is supplied flat-pack, and easily assembled in 2 minutes.

Innermost Origami Side Table, £402.00

27 - Right angles Clean, angular designs remain a strong direction as brands experiment with sculptural geometries in various materials and structures. Triangular shapes allow for modular compositions, from benches to workstations and school desks.

28 - Go with the flow A continuing direction from last year, streamlined, sinuous lines and generous curves define seats and furniture across many brands. Perfect if you love a softer, more feminine look in your home.

29 - Perforated

Again reflecting designers obsession with textures, perforated surfaces and fabrics seem are a trend to look out for. Intricate laser-cut repeats appear on chair backs, adding lightness as well as a decorative element. Last season this was a key trend on the catwalks, and now it’s in our homes, too.

30 - Wheels!

Traditionally seen on the office chair, now wheels are making it into the modern home. Why walk from the kitchen to the living room when you can wheel? As workplace environments continuously evolve, so does the distribution of space and the way it is experienced. Just don’t exceed the speed limits…

31 - Really bright stripes

Elegant and colourful striped patterns that appear borrowed from residential interiors animated many of the displays this year, including upholstered seats, dividers, panels and architectural glass. The more clashing the colours, the better, it seems.

32 - Go out at home

The ‘home bar’ is making a comeback. Transform a corner of your living room into your very own member’s club, with a few bar room essentials. All you need is a handful of minimalist bar stools and an elbow-level surface to lean on, and et voila. For a slick, professional touch, ensure your accessories match, from carafes and bottle openers, to coolers and dishes for nibbles.

Impress your guests with this sophisticated wine cooler stand by Alessi. Serve your wine and champagne in style at your own personal home bar.

Alessi Wine Cooler Stand by Ettore Sotsass, (Was £258.99) Now £220.14

33 - Scandinavian

Our obsession with all things Scandi continues, in fashion, literature, television and of course interior design. This is a trend that’s been going strong since the 1950s, and has since become one of today’s most influential design creeds. Beautifully simple, exquisitely crafted, a few carefully placed pieces will elevate your home’s design status, effortlessly.

34 - Heavy metal At the opposite end of the design spectrum to pared down, Scandinavian elegance is industrial design, perfect for larger spaces. Think early Victorian meets steam punk. From furniture to lamps, raw, metallic surfaces and angular designs give a starkly bold touch to any room.

35 - Back in time tech As technology advances, our taste in aesthetics appears to be harking back to the ‘good old days’ – think lots of wood and antique aesthetics. Thanks to our favourite designers, we can now have it all – classic form and 21st century function. So your speakers, headphones and camera may look vintage to the untrained eye, but in fact, they’re as high-tech as they can get.

A modern classic in the making, the R7 is the reinvention of the classic radiograms with the technology of today. Finished in walnut and sure to become the focal point in your living room, the R7 radio gram will bring a classic element to any contemporary home.

Ruark R7 High Fidelity Radiogram, £1,999

36 - Pendant lighting

Low hanging lighting, from elaborate chandeliers and elaborate, retro affairs, to simple, naked bulbs. This season, your ceiling light should make a design statement, whether that’s minimalist and simple or over the top Baroque.

37 - Barware

Remember the movie Cocktail? All the accessories, bells and whistles Tom et al used to create the prefect, retro cocktail? Invest in the tools of the trade with your own collection of cocktail essentials, in resin or simple brushed steel. From shakers and sieves, to glasses, stirrers and professional spouts. This season, it’s not about ‘instant’, it’s about process and aesthetics.

38 - Decorative doors

Wreaths don’t have to be just for Christmas. Celebrate the sunshine season with a collection of blossoms and greens, careful arranged for a natural, haphazard look. If you love the nautical theme, try this version; clean and varnish mussel shells and create a wreath by layering over each other in rows.

39 - Mix, match and fuse Mixing old and new interior design ideas and incorporating a fusion of styles is something lots of interior designers are getting their teeth into – and you can too. For example, softly curved lines, organic shapes and futuristic colour schemes with stunning accents can dramatically change any interior.

40 - Go skip shopping

Salvaged wood, stone and metal are popular and modern interior design materials, especially rustic wood, natural light wood and well worn, well loved wood. Mix upcycled wood and metal for a classic, contemporary look that’s a little bit nautical with an industrial undertone. In our dreams, our flooring would be cool white marble.

With the look of reclaimed wood your guests will be impressed with this rustic look stool, perfect for any bedroom, living room or study.

Low Wooden Stool Knothole, £25.00

41 - Pretty pastels

This season, natural hues and soft pastels are perfectly set off by shades of grey, soft black and creamy white tones, reinventing classic decorating ideas or bringing beautiful contrasts into contemporary spaces. Other colours to look out for; mustard yellow and mauve, all light and deep purple colours, rich blue and pink colour shades are modern colour design trends 2015.

42 - Feeling blue

Take one colour, and saturate the entire room in shades of it, ‘head to toe’, accessories and all. This season, we’re all about blue. Traditionally, blue is a calming colour, making us think of cerulean seas or soft blue skies. Contrast with touches of charcoal for added richness and drama.

Add some blue accessories to your kitchen with these retro-style storage canisters which are part of a complete set to really fill your room with the colour of the season.

Garden Trading Tea Coffee and Sugar Canisters, £30.00

43 - Old table, new seats

Team contemporary chairs with a rustic table for a cool look that’s very now. By pairing two things that don't seem to go together, you are actually emphasizing the best qualities of both.

44 - ‘Eyeliner’ for your windows

Anyone who has ever seen a woman wearing eyeliner and mascara knows this fact: When you draw a dark line around something, you call attention to it. The same applies to your windows. Clever use of dark trim can help emphasise molding on many-paned windows; it also pulls one's gaze to the leafy trees outside.

45 - Liquid metallic Molten-like metallic are a key trend for the coming season, and seasons to come. So this is the perfect time to embrace your inner magpie, with gleaming surfaces, conspicuous luxury and innovative textiles and materials that create a fluid, metallic finish. The look is opulent, yet modern too.

46 - Brazil Brazil’s presence in the international fashion market continues to grow with its rapidly expanding economy. The largest country in South America and fifth largest in the world, Brazil is home to one of the planet’s largest national populations. Bring the tropics to your home with beautiful, eye-popping colours, bold prints, faded wood and whitewashed walls.

47 - The Sixties More of a movement than a decade, an era marked by space exploration, Mod style, hippie counterculture and a radical approach to style. Designers like Courrèges and Cardin explored unconventional materials such as plastic and metal, and interiors-wise, there was an energetic, optimistic aesthetic and helped to define a period that designers continue to reference today.

48 - Vintage Tubs

In this digital world, it's sometimes nice to retreat to something low-tech. Most vintage-style tubs don't have jets or infinity edges but what they lack in technology that make up in charm.  Vintage tubs are a must for in your home and out!

49 - Alessi It’s hard to think of the Italian design house as anything but super modern, and yet the company is nearly one hundred years old. Their raison d’etre is making everyday items a celebration of style. From sleek cocktail-ware, to cute and quirky pieces that make even the mundane fun, this brand is now officially iconic.

Alessi’s unmistakable style shines through in each of their products. The Noe wine rack is a stylish and contemporary accessory for your kitchen worktop that can be added to, to hold your ever-growing wine collection.

Alessi Noè Wine Rack, (Was 53) Now £45.05

50 - Baroque

The 17th century Baroque period exuded drama and decadence, and this season, it’s time to celebrate ‘excessive ornamentation’ and embrace a more is more ethos. From sumptuous fabrics to lashings of gold leaf, look for elaborate wallpaper motifs, embroidery and embellishment on soft furnishings and scroll-work abound. Remember how Coco Chanel said you should always take off the last accessory you put on? Basically, this trend involves doing the opposite, then doubling it.

At Design 55 we want you to be inspired every day.
