Help Supply Quality Christian Movies (David) – and a {Giveaway}

Many thanks to Sunrise Animation Studios for providing a sample of the product for this review. Opinions are 100% my own.

Christians are meant to shape culture, not follow along and be shaped by culture.  But all too often, when it comes to media, we either don’t engage, or we make trite, cheesy “art” that’s actually known for being terrible.  This shouldn’t be, and so I think it’s important to support creators who are working on creating quality art that upholds a Christian worldview.

I haven’t seen it yet, obviously, because it’s still in the works, but David looks like it’s shaping up to be among them.  In the words of the producers:

Sunrise Animation Studios has embarked on the ambitious journey of making an epic animated Movie about David with the humor, music, and adventure of Tangled paired with the biblical authenticity of The Passion of the Christ or The Prince of Egypt. David’s life was defined by his courage, faith and his love for God, while his fallible, relatable humanity has resonated across cultures and generations. DAVID will tell a story that is authentic to scripture, and yet also a wildly adventurous and entertaining epic movie to appeal to every culture! We are creating what we believe will become the most-viewed animated film of all time, by telling the story of David as you’ve never seen it before.

What is David?

Based on the novel VIIIth Son (8th Son), which is, itself, based on the life of David in Scripture, this animated film seems, from the trailer I watched, to succeed at its goals of having similar art quality to movies like Tangled.  (I hope it follows through on the authenticity promises, as well, although it’s difficult to know that for certain without seeing the whole movie.)

We also read that “the story of David has been the driving passion behind Phil’s [the executive producer/director] journey into film, because of the incredible glimpses of God’s nature that are woven into David’s extraordinary story.” I saw that in the trailer.  I was watching David, but I was also seeing, through his actions, the loving care of The Shepherd.

You can watch it yourself here:

How Can You Get Involved?

David is currently still seeking investors.  The campaign is getting close to the goal, but it’s not there yet, so take a look and consider investing if you’re able.  (You’ll also find more information there about the qualifications of those involved in the project.)

When you invest, it’s an actual investment.  Meaning when the movie does well, you’ll have a share in the profits.

You Said Something About Winning…?

We can’t give away a copy of the movie, ’cause…there’s not a finished movie yet.  But the producers are giving away a copy of the book, VIIIth Son.  (Full disclosure: I’m also getting a copy of the book.  That’s the only personal benefit I gain from sharing this with you.)  There’s a quick turnaround on this one, so be sure to tell your friends to come check this out.

US only.  (If you’re reading in a feed reader, email, etc., you might need to click through too see the widget.)
