These extra crunchy homemade hashbrowns by Always Yummy! are better than anything you can buy from the stores. The texture and taste is perfect. Who knew you could easily make the best hashbrowns at home with just simple ingredients? Not only that, it’s also free of preservatives. Try it now if you have potatoes in your pantry, and make sure you serve it with ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce. Read on or watch the video below for full instructions.

  • 14 oz potato
  • half of small onion (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon of red chili flakes
  • 1/3 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 2/3 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 fl oz of vegetable oil

Step 1:

Start by peeling the potatoes, then shred them into pieces using a grater. Place them in a bowl of cold water for about 5 minutes. This will help remove excess starch which can create a sticky texture on the outside.

Step 2:

Rinse the potatoes in cold water two times, then put them in a clean cloth napkin or cheesecloth. Wrap them with the cheesecloth and squeeze out any excess liquid.

Step 3:

Add the shredded potatoes in a bowl, followed by the chopped onion, 1/4 teaspoon of red chili flakes, 1/3 teaspoon of black pepper, 2/3 teaspoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of flour, and egg. Mix everything well with a fork.

Step 4:

Place a pan over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, take a spoonful of the mixture and add to the pan. Form each one into the shape of a hashbrown. Fry for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Once done cooking, transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel to remove excess oil while you cook the remaining hashbrowns.
