Have a pack of layer cake or 10″ squares you still haven’t used? Here’s an easy dicey Log Cabin Quilt pattern by Moonkin Stitchery you can make with those unused fabrics. It’s a beginner-friendly pattern that you’ll surely enjoy making. Watch the video below for full instructions.
Materials
- one layer cake or 10″ squares
Note: one pack of layer cake can make a throw-size
Instructions
Step 1:
Start by stacking some of the 10″ squares and cutting a 2 1/2″ by 10″ rectangle on the left side. Set it aside. Next, cut a 2 1/2″ by 7 1/2″ rectangle off the top. If you have a rotating mat, it will definitely come in handy. Repeat this to all of your printed 10″ squares.
Step 2:
Time to piece everything back together. First, you need to create a very easy Log Cabin block. Start by taking a square, followed by one 2 1/2″ by 7 1/2″ rectangle and one 2 1/2″ by 10″ rectangle. Make sure the rectangles are a different print from the square, but the rectangles should be matching prints. Sew the 2 1/2″ by 7 1/2″ rectangle to the top of the square. Next, sew the 2 1/2″ by 10″ rectangle to the left side. Take note that the 2 1/2″ by 10″ rectangle will be longer than what is needed. Have that excess tail hang towards the bottom of the block. This way the top prints for the rectangles will kind of match up and create a seamless look. Once sewn together, press it flat and trim off excess fabric. Repeat with the remaining rectangles and squares.
Step 3:
Take half of the log cabin blocks. Get one and place it on your cutting surface so that the outer log cabin is on the top and left sides. Flip it over to the wrong side, and draw a 45-degree line from corner to corner with a pencil. The line should pass between the two rectangles. Repeat with the remaining blocks.
Step 4:
Take one from the first stack that doesn’t have a line and one from the other stack with the line drawn. Place them right sides together, with the strip outer section of the log cabin blocks opposite. Sew a quarter-inch seam allowance on both sides of the drawn line. Once done, cut directly on the line, then press it flat. Repeat with the remaining blocks.
