Sewing Mistakes 101: Thread Breaking

One of the most common problems you will encounter when sewing is Thread breaking. It might be frustrating when this keeps happening, especially if you are in a hurry. The first thing you need to check is your thread. Are you using a poor-quality thread? If so, you might need to change it. If this is not your problem, and you don’t know how to fix it, do not worry. We’ve all been there. Here are three solutions by Singer Sewing Company that you can try to fix this sewing mistake.

Tangled upper thread

One of the main reasons why it breaks is due to tangled thread. Check if your upper thread is tangled around your machine. Remove spool crap, unthread the machine, and replace it with a larger spool cap. Now, rethread the machine.

Bobbin damaged

Is your bobbin damaged? To know if it’s still in good condition, check for rough edges on your bobbin, as it may be the reason why your thread breaks. To check, touch the edges with your finger or try pulling the thread toward the edges. If your thread is getting caught, replace it with a fresh bobbin.

Upper thread catching

If the first two did not work and your thread still breaks, try this third solution. Check if your upper thread is catching. Some thread spools actually have a notch. What you need to do is simply flip the spool of thread over and rethread your machine.

Thread breaking as soon as you start to sew

If this happens to you, check the needle. You might have put the flat side of the needle to the front. Most sewing machines will not let you put the needle in backward, but sometimes it can happen.
