How to Get Rid of Pests Using Ammonia

Ammonia is a chemical widely used for cleaning purposes etc., and among its many uses is repelling or getting rid of pests or bugs. However, Ammonia should be used carefully and in a specific way to avoid harming humans or pets. Make sure to do your research and wear proper gear before proceeding with any of these methods to ensure your and your family members’ safety. Most importantly, make sure to keep these away from pets and children. Watch this video tutorial by Natural Health Remedies on YouTube now for more details.

Materials:

  • Ammonia
  • Detergent
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Old rags
  • Plastic cups
  • Spray bottle
  • Mothballs

Directions:

#1: Rats

Ammonia is a powerful repellent for rats because they can’t stand its pungent smell which will then result in them leaving and dispersing elsewhere. To prepare this solution, simply pour a liter of water into a large bowl, then add in 2 tablespoons of detergent and 2 cups of regular ammonia, and give them a good mix to combine. Place this bowl in a rat-infested area and leave it there until you need to change it or until there are no more rats.

#2: Squirrels

If there are a lot of squirrels in your attic and you want to keep them away, then soak multiple old rags in ammonia, and place them all over your attic or in places where there are a lot of squirrels. The same logic as above, the pungent smell of ammonia is unbearably strong to most animals and rodents, so doing this will drive them away.

#3: Mice

Grab a couple of little plastic cups, fill them with ammonia, and place them in mice-infested areas or where they like to pass through or hide. You can also make a spray solution instead, simply mix together ammonia and water in a spray bottle, then give them a good shake before each use, and spray them in areas where you’ve seen rats and mice previously. They will run away once they come in contact with the mixture as it overwhelms their senses causing them to flee.

#4: Skunks

Skunks hate certain odors such as; citrus, ammonia, and mothballs, and predator urine (dogs and coyotes) can scare them away. To repel skunks, soak a couple of rags in ammonia or grab some mothballs, then place them in areas where they usually enter or pass through. The harsh smell will drive and scare them away, however, this is not a permanent solution, so you will have to reapply this once the chemical fades. Be sure to keep mothballs away from children if you’re using one.
