Different Types of Windows for Your Home

If you’re looking to invest in new windows in your home or beginning the process of building a home, it’s important to keep in mind how they can define your house. It’s not something we often think about, but the reality is that there are so many different types of windows to choose from.

You can customize nearly any of our products to suit your changing tastes and needs. At Window World TX, let us introduce the options available to help you narrow down your top choice. Here are some of the most common types of windows.

Double-Hung Windows

Double-hung windows are the most popular style available. This kind of window has two parts that slide vertically up and down inside the frame. They can open from the top or the bottom, but they will always remain inside the frame.

Our windows come with dual tilt-in sashes, which many homeowners find easy to clean. Double-hung windows are simple to use and make introducing airflow easy with their bottom and top sash that can be raised and lowered.

Single Hung Windows

On a single-hung window, only the bottom pane can move vertically. They can look identical to double-hung windows, and are used in many American homes, but are more commonly found in coastal areas that are prone to high winds.

The defining feature that makes single-hung windows distinct from double-hung windows is their fixed top sash. This means that only the bottom portion is operable. This style may be harder to clean than double-hung windows but is usually a smaller investment.

Bay And Bow Windows

Given that both bay and bow windows have many similarities, they are often grouped together. The main difference between the two of them is their shape. Bay windows look boxy while bow layouts have more panes and a more curved appearance.

Generally, bay windows give you more interior space with their three-dimensional design as they protrude from the exterior of the siding of the house. Their design also lets in additional light which makes for a more open and inviting living space.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are either installed vertically to swing outward from the house or horizontally to open upward from the bottom. They are hinged and operate by turning a crank, and always open outward.

This style is what you typically see in many hotels. They are commonly found in homes with rainy or windy climates as they add flexibility and security when it comes to letting fresh air inside.

Picture Windows

When looking at a picture window, one of the main features you’ll see is that they do not open. These large, stationary panes let in the maximum amount of light and views of the outdoors.

Picture windows are perfect for framing beautiful views. The downside is that they don’t allow for very much privacy unless covered with curtains or other treatments.

Sliding Windows

Like a sliding glass door gliding along a track, a sliding window has at least one operating window that slides horizontally over the other pane. This style is great for places where it’s harder to reach, like behind kitchen sinks or the washer and dryer, because they are easy to open.

These windows are becoming more popular in modern or contemporary-style homes. They are user-friendly and are the ideal option if you’re looking to frame a picturesque view.
