November 2023 Report – Temperature and Humidity in York

This is the latest instalment reporting the temperature and humidity in York, this time for November 2023, using our own bespoke remote monitoring equipment, we track a full month of weather focusing seasonal trends.

We track, analyse and compare indoor and outdoor hygrometer readings throughout winter month in which temperatures dropped below zero for the first time in months. We analyse highlights, averages, highs and lows seen across the month. This is a month where temperatures dropped further noticeably with seasonal problems damp and mould problems in York and locally around becoming more prevalent.

Temperature and Humidity in York – November 2023 Stats

Let’s start with the headline figures and a summary:

  • November 2023 was colder again in York, with average outdoor temperature at 7.3°C
  • This was more so in the last week of the month, with average temps close to freezing
  • The maximum outdoor temperature in York was 13.3°C and the minimum was -0.9°C
  • This meant an outdoor range (between the top and bottom) of 14.2°C
  • The average indoor temperature was higher at 17.9°C (aided by central heating!)
  • The maximum indoor temperature in York was 19.4°C and the minimum was 15.4°C
  • Interestingly, the minimum indoor temperature was above the maximum for outdoors
  • This leads to an indoor range of just 4.0°C which is much narrower again

The detailed chart trend above shows the full, granular readings across the full month, from which the November 2023 highs, lows, range and averages were measured. It shows daily cycles of temperature variances with typical highs during the day and lows during the night. As we covered earlier, from around the 25th November temperatures dropped noticeably lower as we approached December 2023.

On this chart, you can clearly see the outdoor temperature peak in York on 23rd November. Equally, the lowest temperature late in the month on the afternoon of 23rd November.

You can see the indoor temperatures were on average significantly higher, especially when the weather got cooler and that the trends of warmer and colder days in York generally follows for indoors and outdoors. Clearly this was supported by the central heating (and thermostat) regulating that.

  • November 2023 had an average outdoor relative humidity of 88.3%
  • This is his above previous months as we reach the much colder months
  • The highest outdoor humidity in York was 99% and the minimum was 58%
  • This leads to an outdoor range (between the top and bottom) of 41%
  • As seen before, lower humidity happened when temperatures were higher
  • The average indoor relative humidity was lower at 59.0%
  • The maximum indoor humidity in York was 68% and the minimum was 46%
  • This gives an indoor range of just 22% which is also less than outdoor

As you will see, the outdoor (top chart) readings were in a much wider range than the equivalent indoor (bottom chart) readings and more erratic, this is to be expected in a controlled household indoor environment.

As you can see, the inside temperature readings taken from the hygrometer readings for November 2023 are very closely grouped with c.70% of the readings being at c.18°C (rounded to the nearest degree). In contrast, the outdoor readings are far more widely spread across a significantly wider range.

Temperature and Humidity by Time of Day – November 2023

The final set of useful data for November ’23 compares at how different times of day affect indoor and outdoor readings taken by the hygrometer data loggers. The four usual groups are:

  • Morning – 6am to Noon
  • Afternoon – Noon to 6pm
  • Evening – 6pm to Midnight
  • Night – Midnight to 6am

As you would likely predict, usually the afternoon was the warmer part of the day in York during November 2023 with the night and following morning being the coolest, with evening readings being fractionally warmer on average vs the morning. This was the inverse of relative humidity for the reasons mentioned earlier.

Having said that, as the colder weather takes a grip, the variances are lesser in different parts of the day.

What was the temperature in York in November 2023?

There was a noticeable difference comparing temperatures in York for the three weeks of November 2023 when it was relatively warmer vs the colder final week of the month. The highest temperatures locally was 13.3 degrees Celsius with an average for the overall month of 7.3 degrees. The readings were taken by our own local York weather monitoring station in the suburbs of York (not the city centre).
