Soapstone

Soapstone is also known as steatite. It is a metamorphic rock that dates back 300 to 400 million years ago. Soapstone is softer than marble and granite even though they have a similar look to each other. Soapstone is softer because of its high talc content; talc has a definitional value on the Mohs hardness scale. Soapstone can be found in the Appalachian range from Maine to Georgia, deposits have even been found in Vermont and Virginia. Soapstone has many beautiful colors such as:

  • Brown
  • White
  • Black
  • Green
  • Bluish gray
