Render Cleaning for Protection From Fungus

First impressions are important. A clean, inviting house can be let down by a dirty Driveway. Things like moss, lichen and oil stains can cause a driveway to look far from its best. Driveway cleaning can be a headache but in this article we will look at five easy steps to keeping your driveway clean and off your to do list.

Step 1 – Clean up Oil Stains

Oils, brake fluid and petrol spills can easily cause unsightly stains if left on your driveway. If you notice a spill on your driveway make sure to remove it quickly as it will be harder to remove once it dries. Natural absorbents can be used for this such as cat litter, baking soda or sawdust. Cover the stain with your chosen absorbent and leave until the oil has been soaked up.

Step 2 – Sweep and Prepare the Area

Use a stiff bristled outdoor broom to sweep the area of any absorbents and general debris. For the best finished look also remove large weeds and cut back any plants, grass or vegetation. You may notice large discoloured areas where moss and lichen have built up. These will need more than just a sweep to clean off.

Step 3 – Apply Stain Removers

For old oil stains, paint spills or rusty marks you will need to use Stain Removers. Some stain removers contain acid and may damage your driveway or surrounding plants if not used carefully. Many household stain removers will need to be diluted before use but some can be used at full strength for the toughest stains. Chemicals of this kind always need careful handling so, to avoid any accidents, consider getting expert help.

Step 4 – Use a Pressure Washer

Pressure washing can be effective in removing moss, mildew and lichen from your driveway. Always consult the manual of your pressure washer to ensure you are using the correct nozzle, detergent and pressure. Protect nearby plants, wear waterproof clothing and wash downhill and away from the direction of your house and cars to avoid messy splashes.

Step 5 – Apply a Sealant

The British weather can cause a driveway to corrode and discolour over time. Protect your driveway against weather damage, weed growth and staining by applying a sealant. A sealant will give your driveway a longer lease of life and keep it looking in mint condition. Sealing a driveway yourself is much like preparing for redecorating – sealants must be mixed well, edges should be ‘cut in‘ and you will want to prepare a paint tray and long pile roller for the job.

Driveway cleaning doesn’t need to become that big job you can’t help but put off. Keeping on top of weeding, sweeping often and cleaning spills as they happen will help to maintain a driveway you can be proud of.
