The National Family Day in the Philippines was officially declared a national celebration by the government in 1992. More than a holiday, the occasion marks the vital roles of families in progress and nation-building.

Honoring familial bonds and the importance of families in the fabric of Philippine society, the Department of Social Welfare and Development encourages the celebration of National Family Week. From September 23 to 29, 2023, Filipino families commemorate the connections that unite and fortify these relationships by crafting everlasting memories. 

The occasion is to acknowledge how families shape society by providing unwavering love and support, each member a piece that completes one another’s dreams, goals, beliefs, and aspirations.

The day aims to promote family values, sense of belonging, and togetherness. More importantly, it serves as encouragement to invest in our connections with those we love dearly, not just during the month of September but throughout the year. The transition from traditional to digital art coincided with new software, techniques, tools, and devices, such as drawing pads and tablets. 

Digital creation as an art form has become more established with the internet and social media. A medium that merges traditional artistic techniques with cutting-edge technology, it encompasses various creative works, including drawings, paintings, animations, sculptures, and more, all handled and produced using digital devices and software. This technique allows a high degree of flexibility and innovation, enabling artists to explore new designs and styles while pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms.

A Canvas of Unbreakable Bonds: A Digital Art Competition

Camella’s digital art competition, “A Canvas of Unbreakable Bonds,” has sparked the imagination of artists and creative minds aiming to capture the essence of family with the theme “The Heart of our Home: Embracing Family Harmony.” 

The contest saw an array of incredible submissions, bringing digital creativity to its peak. After careful evaluation, the following talented individuals emerged as the winners:

The Winning Masterpiece: Family Ties by John Bryan Estipona

Standing out among numerous entries is one that brilliantly encapsulates how family is the heart of every home. The winner, John Bryan Estipona, who created Family Ties, explains, “A play on the words “ties,” digital artwork signifies the role and responsibility of each family member in building a home of love, respect, and peace. It also depicts their bond, with their hands connected by strings. The strings have three colors: yellow signifies the parents’ commitment to the family it has formed; red, also forming the figure of the house in the artwork, connotes a home built by love; and blue, interlaced on everyone’s fingers, means peace that resides in the heart of each home.” (Quotation is condensed for clarity.) 

Estipona’s artwork captures the eye and touches the heart by portraying the intricate connections within a family, emphasizing the key elements that make a house feel like a home. In support of his talent and vision as an artist, he is coming home with a Xiaomi Redmi Pad 4!

Special Citations  

Special citations and tokens of appreciation were also given to two exceptional artists, Jessied Gabrang Palagbas and Jake Masmila, whose digital creations beautifully resound the importance of family. 

Masmila’s artwork focused on how love from each family member fortifies a home, emphasizing that everyone is an essential part of a household. Palagbas’s creation, on the other hand, beautifully encapsulated the idea that a home is not merely a structure but is a product of the people who reside in it, echoing the idea that family is what truly makes a house a home.

In this year’s celebration of National Family Day, Camella celebrated family in its purest sense: that every home is more than just a space but a sanctuary where families come together. Camella’s digital art competition, “A Canvas of Unbreakable Bonds,” showcased the art community’s immeasurable talent and highlighted how family harmony is vital to any home.
