Palarong Pambansa Comeback Introduces New Generation of Future National Athletes

After a four-year hiatus, the 63rd edition of the Philippines’ Palarong Pambansa is finally back, this year, hosted by Marikina City from July 29 to August 5, 2023, setting the stage for budding athletes of this generation.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. formally opened the games during the grand ceremony held in Marikina Sports Complex. The theme for the current iteration of the long-standing athletic competition was “Batang Malakas, Bansang Matatag”, affirming the potential of FIlipino youth to excel in sports.

Over 9,000 student-athletes from 17 regional athletic associations competed in 34 sports for Elementary and Secondary, including para-games, demonstration sports, and exhibition games.

Eldrew Yulo, the 15-year-old brother of the famous gymnast Carlos Yulo, claimed the individual all-around gold in secondary boys’ artistic gymnastics with a personal best of 46.25 points.

Jie Angela Mikaela Talosig, a 17-year-old incoming Grade 11 student from Midsayap, North Cotabato, swam the fastest in the secondary girls’ 400-meter freestyle with a time of four minutes and 38.98 seconds, and ruled the 100m freestyle, 200m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle.

Peter Cyrus Dean, a Grade 11 student from Lucena City, won in the secondary boys’ 400m individual medley and secondary boys’ 100m backstroke with a time of 1:00.69.

In the elementary division, 12-year-old Krystal David from Metro Manila won the gold medal in the girls’ 100m breaststroke, gaining a record-breaker with a time of 1:17:98 and shattering the old record from 2013 Palarong Pambansa.

In athletics, Loraine Audrey Batta of CALABARZON won the gold medal in the secondary girls’ 3000m.

The annual multi sport event, which invited participating regions including student athletes from the Cordillera administrative region, Zamboanga peninsula region, Bicol region, Ilocos region and Ilocos Norte, Cagayan Valley, Cebu City, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, and many other provinces, wrapped up on August 3.
