10 Fun Rainy Day Activities in the Philippines

Looking for something to do during the Rainy season?

According to a study by psychologist Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., author of Playful Parenting, “When kids don’t have appropriate channels to release their energy and emotions, it can manifest as irritable, aggressive, or attention-seeking behavior.”

The most challenging part of rainy weather is keeping the kids entertained while stuck indoors. Kids love to frolic outdoors and spend hours with friends under the sun. A rainy day will keep them from doing fun things that they love to do outside the House.

But rather than stress out over a rainy day, why not use it as an opportunity to spend time with the whole family and create great memories together? There is an endless list of fun rainy day activities for kids to do that the adults will surely enjoy, too.

Whether bored or curious about trying new things, read on and find something to try. Here’s to having fun even while raining! Who knows – a day spent indoors might be a great chance to tick something off the bucket or watch list.

1. Indoor Activities for Kids

It is important to keep the kids entertained on a rainy day. Here are more ideas for fun rainy day activities that kids love and will surely enjoy.

Board Games

Classic games will bring out the competitive spirit in them and foster camaraderie. Take out some jigsaw puzzles or tackle some crossword puzzles together. Just something to keep their minds from wandering outdoors. For a more active classic game, hide-and-seek might do the magic trick.

Treasure Hunt or Scavenger Hunt

Planning and holding a treasure hunt or a scavenger hunt is a fun way for the whole family to spend quality time together and create lasting memories on a rainy day.

The idea of a treasure hunt is to keep the length of the hunt according to kids’ ages and temperaments to ensure that the treasure at the end of the play will be something they will enjoy.

If you have kids in the house, dressing them up like treasure hunters can earn you bonus points.

Leave Clues

Leave a series of clues wherein each clue leads to the next one. Depending on the age of the kids, it can be shorter or longer.

The clues can be anything – something to remind them of family members, family experiences like maybe earlier trips, or you can use them to spend a day of learning like helping them recall results from science experiments — while doing the treasure hunt.

Pop up cardboard boxes along the way to create excitement. Then, finally, the main clue leads to the treasure.

Treasure at the end of the Hunt

Set up an escape room where the treasure hunters can find clues. Parents can place a small treasure in the escape room at the end of the clue for the ultimate champion.

This can be anything simple like candy or chocolate bars, little toys like small toy cars if you have boys or even money if you have teens in the house.

Indoor Obstacle Course

Putting up obstacle courses inside the house is a great way to stimulate the brain and the body and, more importantly, manage the negative behaviors parents might be subjected to during rainy days.

“Necessity is the mother of invention,” as the saying goes. With the rainy days ahead, it’s time to get creative to win the war over cabin fever.

Before you start, there are three important tips to keep in mind. Engage the kids in the construction part of the obstacle course to make it fun for them, keep the safety of the whole family a priority, and keep the activity at low cost by using recycled materials or stuff inside the house.

Here are some ideas for indoor obstacle courses to get you started:

Create Tunnels

If you do not have a kid’s tunnel,  you can easily make one by lining up a row of chairs for kids to crawl through. Since they will be running and jumping around anyway, have them do army crawls through strips of newspapers to make it more fun and challenging.

Fun paper maze

Criss-cross crepe paper or lengths of yarn throughout the hallway of the house. If you do not have some in the house, toilet paper will do. Crank up some Mission Impossible music and let the challenge begin!

You can also go for book mazes if your hallway is not long enough. Ask the kids to gather all their books and have them set up as low walls to mazes. To add a little bit of difficulty and fun, have the kids run through the mazes with balls in between their knees.

Sack races

If you have kids that can’t hold still, give them pillowcases in place of sacks and make a game out of it.

Feet off!

Cut out foot-shaped decals from construction paper or used paper lying in the house. Stick these on the floor in different directions and have the kids hop on them without touching the floor.

It will be fun watching them try to keep their balance as they hop from one decal to the next.

Tea Party

Instead of just preparing snacks for the whole family, gather everyone in the family room for a tea party! Get some cookies and other snacks to make it more filling.

Science Experiment

Spend an afternoon learning with kids. Play school with your kids and conduct science experiments that will keep their minds active.

Pajama Day for Kids

Call for a Pajama Day party for kids. It does not have to be a sleepover, but it can substitute their afternoon nap. Create a blanket fort to make it exciting for everyone. Throw in some sleeping bags and fill the place with stuffed animals.

2. Hold a video game tournament

One of the fun things to do on a rainy day is to play your favorite games. There aren’t many opportunities to relish in these, especially with the world going on a much faster pace.

Whether playing alone or with a group, one can always find a board game, puzzle, or video game to enjoy.

It’s also worth mentioning that this is a great way to heal your inner child.

3. Organize an Indoor Dance Party

To keep kids or anyone from getting cabin fever on a rainy day, it is helpful to constantly move around. A dance party is one of the fun activities for kids. Put on some tunes and get the kids to perform popular dance moves. Join them! Kids would love to see their parents dance along.

4. Clean and declutter your space

A dirty home leads to a lot of problems like lingering allergy-inducing dust and a breeding ground for bacteria and diseases. It’s better to be in a clean household where you’re sure you can live free from illnesses.

With the wet season, it’s also possible to get the rainy day blues. Decluttering can boost mood and rein in a productive mindset. Studies have confirmed that living in a clean home can lower stress levels.

Sifting through your old and present stuff is one of the most challenging yet rewarding indoor activities. Prepare boxes of items for discard, those for donations like old clothes, and items for keep.

Remember that one person’s garbage can be another’s treasure.

What’s also impressive about keeping indoor spaces clean is it helps in relieving anxiety and getting good shut-eye! Doesn’t it feel amazing to live in an organized space?

5. Catch up with friends, family, and loved ones

If you have been busy with work or school for a while, this is a good time to express affection and care for loved ones. Remind the people that you love them and make sure to give back to your support system.

Catching up with friends and family is almost like free therapy. It brings out a sunny day in rainy weather.

With studies proving friendships beneficial for one’s health, it can also be noted that they can reduce loneliness and stress and increase resilience and personal growth. Remember, one doesn’t always have to be alone.

6.  Make your comfort food

This is the perfect time to stay warm and cozy with food that brings comfort. Whether baking chocolate chip cookies, making a giant bowl of hot soup, or stashing some snacks, there’s something for everyone.

If you are in the mood for cooking classes, you might find one in social media, or you can take out that family recipe book you’ve been meaning to follow for years on end and try to recapture moments with mom and grandma in the kitchen.

7. Have a hot drink at a café

Treat yourself to a cup of hot espresso or latte at Coffee Project. To upgrade the experience this rainy season, turn thoughts into words by visiting Dear Joe, the first letter-writing cafe in the Philippines!

Even if it were journaling, updating one’s weekly or annual planner, or watching people pass by in any of these cafés, there’s nothing like enjoying a rainy day with a warm drink in hand and the warmth and aesthetic of a coffee shop.

If going out isn’t possible, order your favorite food and drink online or through food delivery apps. Coffee Project has appetizing dishes and the best-tasting coffee and beverages, which can be easily delivered right to your doorstep. Order here.

8. Make your own cocktail

Create spirited concoctions in the comfort of your own home. Make a margarita, mulled wine, or other warm cocktails and create tantalizing flavors that go well with the rainy weather. Some good alcohol bases to have during this time are bourbon, wine, vodka, and whisky.

Whatever flavors you desire, just make sure to have the drink warm to complement the inclement weather. Drink responsibly!

9. Movie Marathon: Binge-watch movies or TV series

Think about it: the rain is pouring outside, and there is no choice but to stay indoors. Meal prep before your movie night, or better yet, order a solo meal. What a great time to get cozy under the blankets and binge-watch those movies or episodes on the watch list!

Enjoy documentaries, brighten up with a magical animated film, or let in some warmth with a romance movie. Whatever you choose, it’s guaranteed that watching a great movie or series during a rainy day is a fun way to spend time well.

Family Movie Night

If you are in the company of kids, gather the whole family for a day of binge-watching on favorite classic movies, documentaries, and cartoon shows that kids love. Pair moving watching with popcorn and freshly squeezed juice or chocolate chip cookies and warm milk. This should keep the kids still for an hour or two.

10. Fun Rainy Day Activities for Adults

Use the rainy days to do the things you’ve been putting aside and enjoy some alone time that will get you refreshed weeks after. Rainy days do not mean getting stuck inside the house. Go out while the rest stay indoors.

There’s lesser traffic, shorter queues at restaurants, and lesser chances of bumping into someone who will take away your precious alone time minutes.

Eat at a fancy restaurant and savor every bite while sipping chardonnay. Visit a local brewery and drink your heart out while having fun with your favorite people. Who says you can’t have ice cream with heapings of your favorite toppings on a rainy day?

Spend an entire day window shopping or explore novel shops. Book a relaxing spa day.

Get your list out for more ideas on fun things you want to do on a rainy day.

Self Care Day

If being at a spa isn’t your thing, indoor activities can include a long, warm bubble bath which can relax your mind and body. Slather on moisturizing soap blends like you would at the spa. Put on a personal white noise machine to keep all noises out that will keep your mind wandering. This should do the magic trick!

Catch up on Sleep

If the body is not into doing any of the activities mentioned, then the best thing to do is rest. Sleep is very important to the body and can help lower the risks of stress and serious illnesses. It can also make the skin look good and help the mind function optimally.

Remember that recharging is a form of self-care, and it is very important for overall well-being. Relax and rest.

Enjoy the rainy season doing what matters and nurtures.
