What are Colour Flakes?

The Basics

Colour flakes are decorative flakes, colour chips, vinyl colour chips, or flecks. These are specially formulated polymer paint aggregates which are utilized to improve the aesthetic attributes of resinous flooring systems.

It is made with the combination of acrylic and vinyl resins. It is normally composed of organic minerals, resin materials, additives and other pigments.

The thickness of the thin flake is normally 4-5 mils. Colour flakes come in different shapes and sizes and in a standardized range. These can be custom blended to reach optimal appearance and texture qualities with a resinous flooring system just to match the décor.

Decorative Flake Resinous Flooring System

Three coat system is used for decorative flake resinous flooring system.

The three-coating systems consist of the following:

* A coat of primer.

* A base coat.

* A colour flake broadcast layer, and a topcoat to further protect the surface.

Double Broadcast Decorative Flake Resinous Flooring System

If you want to have a full broadcast colour flake floor, it is recommended that you go for a double broadcast decorative flake system. This will give you durability, and optimal appearance.

This is a widely used system among the customers and has been proved to be the best as it lasts longer and keeps the look of the floor attractive for many years.

Colour Flake Size Profile Options

When choosing a colour flake design, size matters. Generally, colour flakes are available in six standardized size ranges such as:

  • Original (1”), 1/2”, 1/4”, 1/8”, 1/16”, and 1/32”.

Each size profile distinctively influences the look of the overall décor.

Larger colour flake sizes are random in shape and offer a broad range of dimensions. On the other hand, smaller flakes are more consistent in shape and size as these are reduced.

Application Coverage Rates

Application coverage rates will give you an estimate of the quantity of colour flakes you would need to complete the flooring project.

Even though coverage rates vary depending on the techniques of the application, here are some common application coverage rates that can be used as good references.

Colour Choices: Solid Colour Options

Unlike traditional flooring options, decorative colour flakes are available in different colours, sizes and styles that can be customized as already mentioned above.

You can be creative with the floor and create individuality with the custom flake floor. You can incorporate colour schemes by matching them with the surrounding construction materials and blend them to unite the design characters of the environment.

Or you can even experiment with the set of dissimilar colours at opposite ends of the spectrum to create a dramatic or contrasting effect. Or you can even provide a calming effect by pairing similar colours.

Blend Colours

Colour flake manufacturers have also made the process a little easier by customizing many colours to suit the aesthetic and ergonomic requirements of different flooring environments.

Basecoat Colour Options

You do not have to worry about basecoat colour if you have selected the full broadcast system. If partial coverage is picked, make sure you choose a basecoat colour that matches the colours of your flakes and suits the rest of the ambiance. Here are the famous basecoat colours:

Colour Flakes Limitations

  • Colour flakes are random in shapes which might not provide optimal aesthetics.
  • Flakes sizes can be slightly different from box to box because of the manufacturing process, the blending process, and damages during transportation.
  • Experienced colour flake professional installers can notice the difference and avoid uneven distribution while broadcasting. This won’t be an issue for a full broadcast system or even for a double broadcast system.
  • The colour pigmentation in colour flakes is UV stable. However, the specifications for the UV stability and environmental durability of your coating system, especially the topcoat, will determine the outdoor suitability. Epoxy topcoats will amber or even show discolouring problems if exposed to UV for long hours.
