Introduction

Welcome to my guide to how to propagate Monstera Adansonii (a.k.a. the swiss cheese vine, a.k.a. the money mask monstera) I have a few of these around my home of various sizes and I’ve propagated them in various ways. They are really easy to propagate, the best way for me is water propagation then first then move them to soil. They are from Central and South America, but they do well in most homes.

How To Propagate Monstera Adansonii In Water

You can easily propagate your Monstera Adansonii in water, follow these steps:

Step 1:

Get your Plant and decide where you want to cut first, and think about how the plant will look afterwards too. You want each cutting to have one leaf and one node ideally, and you’ll want to leave at least some of the plant to grow back. With a vining plant like this you can cut a few cuttings off the end off each vine (like a hair cut!) or you can take one long stem off and chop that up into individual cuttings).

Step 2:

Take a sharp knife and make the cuttings. In the pictures below you can see I took off one long branch. Then I trim each cutting down so it has one leaf and one node. If you get a node without a leaf, keep these aside a you can propagate them in soil or moss later. They will propagate and grow much quicker if they have a leaf on them

Step 3:

You can dramatically reduce the chances of rot by leaving the cuttings for 3 or 4 hours so that the open wounds heal over. Then water will not get in.

Step 4:

Put the cuttings in a jar of water. I use filtered tape water from a Brita filter jug. Arrange the cuttings so that the nodes are well under the water. But try to avoid leaves touching the water as they can rot of they get too wet. If the water goes cloudy, the rot can spread.

Step 5:

Keep the jar in a bright place, but out of direct sun. And keep it warm. Keep an eye on it to make sure it does not cloudy. If it does then take out any cuttings that are rotting and change the water. It should start to root with in a week or two and have a good amount of new roots in one or two months.

Step 6:

You can keep them in water ongoing if you like. If you decide the fertilize them, use a very well diluted feed, and consider using a container that does not let light in as the water can go green if it has fertilizer in it and sunlight gets to it.

Or you can move them to soil.

How To Propagate Monstera Adansonii In Soil

You can propagate adansonii using soil propagation. Sometimes I just pot them back in with the main plant to make it bushier. You want to take cuttings and plant them in soil so the nodes are under the soil and the leaves are above the soil and not touching it if possible.

Here are some pointers to get the best out of your soil propagations:

• Make sure the cuttings have at least one node and one leaf each.
• Make sure your cuttings do not have open wounds – take the cuttings and leave them aside for a few hours for the open wounds to seal over.
• Keep them humid – you can put a plastic bag over the pot. Keep the bag a little bit open to avoid stagnant air and rot.
• Keep the cuttings moist but not soaking wet: do not over water them.
• Once they put out new leaves from the top of the plant you can consider the propagation done.
• You can make a plant bushier by cutting off it’s leggy stems, and planting them back in to the plant pot to make the plant fuller and thicker.
• I find that water propagating them first really helps to reduce the cuttings lost to rot. Then move the cuttings to to soil once rooted.

How To Propagate Monstera Adansonii In Sphagnum Moss

Aroids like Monstera Adansonii take very well to sphagnum moss. If you have some nodes without leaves, it is great for that too. Just soak some moss, and squeeze the majority of the water off it, and fill a cup with it. You can plant cuttings in it directly, about the same depth as you would with soil. Don’t pack it down too hard as you can want some air to get to the roots.

If you have nodes you can put them on the surface of the moss, then push them in gently with your finger, then lightly over them in a very thin layer so they can still get light and air, but will get moist moss around the nodes to encourage rooting.

Keep the moss moist, humid and well lit until the plant roots and puts out new leaf growth.

How To Propagate Monstera Adansonii In Leca

You can plant them in leca, they tend to take very well. I always water propagate them first so they are already rooted. Make sure you wash the leca thoroughly and soak it. I normally rinse it in a colander to get most of the clay powder off, then submerge it all in water. Then repeat to make sure there’s no clay residue. I then soak it for an hour or so.

I fill a clear plastic cup (with no drainage holes) a third full with leca, then I hold the cutting in place and I get a second cup of leca pebbles and pour them in around the sides to fill the pot.

Then I maintain a couple of centimeters or half an inch of water at the bottom of the cup as a reservoir.

When you first put the cutting in the the leca you need to be really careful as the plant can fall out easily. After about 2 weeks when the roots and leca have settled it will be more secure.
