Arlington Exterior House Painting Inspiration

Check out some of our recent projects, including the paint colors we used, to find inspiration for your Arlington Exterior House Painting project.

Each of Arlington’s neighborhoods bears a distinct character. The Arlington Residential Design Guidelines study noted that residents here have a strong “sense of place,” and care deeply about the physical characteristics of the neighborhoods they live in.

How to Choose an Exterior Paint Color?

An important element of your Arlington Exterior House painting project includes choosing paint colors that match the house style and the neighborhood’s character. This is especially true if you live in a historic home, though the Arlington Historic District Commission doesn't review paint colors. However, they ask that unpainted masonry remain unpainted.

Fortunately, you have many options. Seven unique home styles dominate the Arlington landscape, and many of those styles traditionally used vibrant, gorgeous colors to make their homes more attractive and interesting.

Here are some Arlington exterior house painting projects that ProTEK Painters has completed to give you some ideas.

Historic Home with Porch

One of the coolest things about working with historic home restoration projects in Arlington, MA is the fact that historic home builders weren’t at all shy about using color.

To preserve this home’s charming character, we used Sherwin Williams 6494 Lakeshore for the body of the home. This gentle blue-green color is eye-catching without being too aggressive. SW 6608, Rave Red, allowed us to really emphasize the historic character of the home with a complementary, eye-catching trim. Finally, we trimmed the rest of the home out in SW 7767, High Reflective White.

The results were both inviting and bold, and well in line with other Victorian homes.

Arlington, MA Traditional Clapboard Home

We enhanced the simple structural beauty of this home by choosing SW 7757, High Reflective White, for the body of the home. It looks lovely against the simple landscapes and lets the clean lines of the Craftsman style shine through.

To further enhance the classic look, we added SW 6244, Naval Blue, to all the shutters. The home fits right in with all of its neighbors and offers a truly timeless appeal.

We see a lot of variety in Arlington exterior house painting jobs. This home has a complex design, and it would be easy for really bright colors to overwhelm the stonework. After consulting with the homeowner, we chose Sherwin Williams 0029, Acanthus, for the siding itself.

The shutters are a complementary Jade Dragon (SW 9129). To ensure the home didn’t end up too dark, we added SW 7006, Extra White, to all the pillars and trim.

The result is a reserved but gorgeous home that any family could be proud to own.

Arlington, MA Single Family Home

Here’s a bright, cheerful home. It looks a little yellow in this photo, but yellows can often be too bright for exterior paint and can be difficult to clean.

Instead, we achieved this effect with SW 6421 Celery. The trim is a shade known as SW 9146 Faded Flaxflower. The stairs accentuate the home with a shade of brown called 9006 Black Bean.

Foursquare Home Repair and Repaint

Here you have a “before” picture as our crews engage in some light siding and carpentry repair prior to beginning our painting project. Preparation is so important to achieving outstanding results on any project!

The owner wanted the building restored to its original color scheme after it was done, so for this Arlington exterior house painting project, we applied fresh coats of SW 6020 Marooned with SW 7065 Argos trim.

Arlington, MA Apartment Steps

Remember, the siding and trim aren’t the only portions of a building’s exterior! Here’s a light commercial job we did at a local apartment complex here in Arlington. Many homes in the area have similar steps affixed to the exterior of their home leading to a second level, such as a mother-in-law suite.

You can be as creative with these elements as you want to be. You don’t have to stick to browns, grays, or blacks. Here, we had fun playing with shades of blue and green, using SW 7623 Cascades for the primary stair and railing color, and SW 0063 Blue Sky on the trim.

Arlington, MA Large Home

There's never anything wrong with getting back to basics. In fact, many of our Arlington exterior house painting projects include neutral exterior paint colors like white, off white, gray, brown, and black.

We're touching this home up with SW 7012, Creamy Beige.

Before and After

Most of our customers love before and after photos, so we thought we'd include a pair of those as well! This helps show how you can choose to update your home with brand new colors, even if your home was a totally different color before.

Originally, this fabulous home had pink siding and white trim. After we were done, we applied a classic color pairing for a Colonial home. The body is SW 6810, Lupine Blue. While the photo makes the trim look white, it's actually a gentler shade of blue: look for SW 6476, Glimmer.

A large home like this one tends to benefit from a bolder color palette, but the classic grays that are trending all over Arlington would also have looked quite nice with this home.
