The right area rug can make any room more comfortable and visually appealing. They help to define an area and pull together elements. This article helps you learn how to Select the right size area rug.

From a completely functional perspective, rugs protect flooring, absorb noise and provide a comfortable padding under our feet.

One of the most common mistakes when purchasing an area rug is buying too small. If you’re not finding the exact measurements that you want, remember that it’s better to choose one that is a bit larger.

Living Room

The rug should be centered under your coffee table and should compliment your furniture arrangement. The legs of your furniture should sit consistently the same, whether all legs of the chairs and sofa are off the rug, only the front legs of each piece are on the rug or all the legs of each piece are on the rug. Stay consistent. It should be the same for all of the furnishings in the arrangement.

Bedroom

When measuring for your bedroom rug, remember that you will want your feet to land on the rug when getting out of bed. If you have nightstands on both sides of your bed, then measure the length from the outside front corner of one nightstand, across your bed and to the opposite front corner of your other nightstand. This is one of the measurements you need. The other measurement should reflect the distance from the front of your nightstands to a point about 2 feet out from either the foot of your bed or foot bench. If your looking for a nice effect without spending as much money, then consider two matching runners on either side of the bed.

Dining room

Selecting the right area rug can be as simple as finding a rug shape that will compliment the shape of your dining room table. It is most aesthetically appealing to have the rug the same shape as the table. Ideally, the rug should be large enough to place both your table and chairs on it. There should be enough rug area so that when the chairs are pulled back from the table for sitting, they will still have their back legs on the rug.

Foyers and Hallways

Are you measuring for an area that is unfurnished such as a foyer or hallway? Then measure based on how much of the flooring you want to have exposed. Don’t forget to consider any doors that will be opened. Make certain that your choice of rug will not impede opening the doors.

Use painter’s tape to help visualize rug placement. This tip is an easy way to make certain that you are selecting the right size area rug.
