Why Gautam Adani and Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina met

Read Time:2 Minute, 57 Second

Recently, Indian business tycoon and the chairman of the Adani Group, Gautam Adani, had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina. The meeting came after the Adani Group commissioned India’s first transnational power project – the Ultra Super-Critical Thermal Power Plant in Godda, Jharkhand. This power plant will meet the electricity demand of Bangladesh and substantially boost India’s economic growth.

Godda Power Plant Project – Kickstarting India-Bangladesh Cooperation in Energy

The Godda power plant is an Adani-built project in Jharkhand. With this, India has stepped into the first transnational power project, reflecting the strong ties between the two nations. This plant aims to supply 100% of its generated electricity to Bangladesh.

Now let’s look at the features of this project:

  1. From Adani Updates, it is learnt that the Godda power plant will supply 1,600 MW of electricity to Bangladesh.
  2. Before the supply of electricity to Bangladesh began, Adani Power Jharkhand Ltd (APJL) underwent a dependable capacity test for about 6 hours. Plant personnel conducted this test to check if both the units of the plant were functioning effectively.
  3. The inaugural 800 MW unit of the Godda power plant initiated commercial operations on April 6. Subsequently, the second 800 MW unit of the plant became operational on June 26.
  4. Adani Power Jharkhand Limited will facilitate a total of 1,496 MW from the Godda Ultra Super Critical Thermal Power Plant.
  5. This supply was made possible through a power purchase agreement (PPA) signed in November 2017 between APJL and the Bangladesh Power Development Board.
  6. The agreement spans a duration of 25 years. The power is transmitted via a dedicated 400 kV transmission system that connects to the Bangladeshi grid.

Adani Emerges as a Powerful Conglomerate

The successful inauguration of the Godda Ultra Super Critical Thermal Power Plant is an example of the Adani Group’s exceptional expertise in managing projects. Notably, Adani Updates understands that the USCTPP achieved commissioning within 42 months following financial closure and regulatory approvals.

This achievement is all the more significant due to the complex logistical hurdles the project surmounted, including a 105 km-long 400 kV Double Circuit Transmission Line, establishing a dedicated railway line, and realizing an extensive water pipeline sourced from the Ganges.

The Adani Group is capable enough to mitigate or conquer these challenges, setting an example by offering world-class capabilities for large-scale project execution.

How Will Electricity Supply Benefit Bangladesh?

Adani Updates reveal that the Godda plant will operate with purely flue gas desulphurization (FGD), selective catalytic reconverter (SCR) and zero water discharge. Significantly, this will lower carbon emissions, protecting mother nature while meeting the standards of the Ministry of Environment.

As Bangladesh attempts to cater to the energy demands of its growing population by leveraging renewable sources, the Adani Group has given an assurance to the nation by the meeting of Gautam Adani and Sheikh Hasina. During the meeting, both were warm to each other, and Gautam Adani appreciated the efforts of Sheikh Hasina for being bold in solving her nation’s problems. Supply from the Godda plant will prevent the country’s energy crisis from escalating.

Moreover, a continuous electricity supply will benefit Bangladesh as the country will purchase electricity at a lower cost. This will provide Bangladesh a chance to strengthen its economy while Adani will contribute to a robust economic structure for India.

Bangladesh is capable of providing more transmission lines for electricity corridors, and probably Adani Group may lead future projects as well.
