South Melbourne couple, Nat and Sheldon, are finally ready to sell Nat’s small, outdated inner-city South Melbourne apartment in order to realise their dream of settling down in a quieter area. Nat bought her apartment in 2012 for $565k, and while it will certainly have appreciated in value since then, there is a lot of work to be done to give it the modern facelift that is required for a successful sale in today’s tough market.
The couple call on Rosie and Paddy, the legendary design team from Selling in the City, to transform the apartment and help create the sale they so desperately need.
As with every project, first off Rosie and Paddy visit the neighbourhood surrounds to get a feel for the local vibe as well as inspiration for the creative process that is key to any renovation. First up they take in the vibrant food and coffee culture of South Melbourne, before visiting the famous South Melbourne market and wandering the streets, observing the Victorian-era architecture.
Their final stop is Melbourne’s National Gallery Victoria which leaves them both brimming with ideas for Nat’s small apartment.
The inside of the apartment is where most of the renovation action will take place, in particular the upstairs bathroom. Key to the overall refurbishment though, was the need to maximise the sense of space and light, giving the perception that the apartment is bigger than it actually is!
All walls, throughout the interior, were painted in the highly light-reflective Wattyl White in I.D. Advanced Ultra Low VOC low sheen paint – a warm, very neutral white. Ceilings were painted in Wattyl I.D. Advanced Ceiling Flat White.
Starting with the kitchen, Rosie removed the two nib walls, at either end of the benchtop, which instantly opened up the entire space. A new benchtop was installed, along with matching splash back – the existing cabinetry had to stay due to budget constraints.
One particularly effective decorative element that was introduced was the noggin wall, which runs the entire length of the apartment, including the kitchen. This introduces a virtual gallery, that takes up very little space, and is used for the display of plants – but it could be used for other decorative elements as well.
The upstairs bathroom posed the biggest challenge – but it became the showstopper of the entire apartment! The whole bathroom was demolished so as to make room for a walk-in shower with beautiful glass brick dividing wall from floor to ceiling. The entire space – floors and walls – were tiled in the same soft grey-hued stone tiles and two smart, pared-back vanities were installed side by side. There is even a beautiful dry-grooming station.
